Okay? Okay. This is how estrus works: pre-estrus, functionally the same as the follicular phase. Again, paraphrasing. Next, the estrus phase, very similar to ovulation. Just like humans can only conceive during ovulation, these animals can only get pregnant during estrus.

Menstruation works like this: there are four phases. The follicular phase, where your body thickens the uterine lining and prepares to release an egg. I am paraphrasing. Next, ovulation, where an egg is released and can be fertilised.

When tested on cognition and performance at varying stages of the cycle, some studies reveal a slightly different state of affairs. A 2025 study led by Flaminia Ronca found reaction times were best around ovulation. A 2024 study led by the same author found performance was best during menstruation.
