His bed. It’s huge, almost comically large, big enough to sprawl in and more than big enough for sex. Golden hour sunlight slices across the mattress where it sits sunken into the loft floor, crisscrosses of shadow from the window panes rolling over the hills and valleys of the small nest of pillows left mussed and abandoned. There’s a twist of— of something snarled in her gut as she looks down at the tangle of sheets, the pillow still bearing an indent from where he laid his head. Something she doesn’t want to put a name to. Fletcher scarcely realizes she’s moving before she’s drifted forward, gingerly lowered herself down to kneel on the mattress. He’s going to give her hell for getting her dirty workboots on his bed. That doesn’t feel important right now.

the lifeblood of her machines lives beneath her nails, its scent always clinging to her flesh. it colors her limbs, her hands, her cheeks and forehead and nose— it’s not that she doesn't try to clean it off, it’s that she can’t, that it’s stained her skin after decades of work in the shop, that no matter how much she scrubs at it mere hours later it’s back again anyway, so there’s not much of a point. it is as much a part of her as the art dotted across her skin, the way she roughly hacks at her hair with scissors in the bathroom mirror; it is part of the body she’s made hers.
