A tomato plant with oblong fruits in various stages of ripeness. The ripe tomatoes are a vibrant orange-red. ‘San Marzano’ tomato is a heritage sauce/paste tomato dating back hundreds of years to Italy. It is a disease-resistant indeterminate variety with enormous vines (recommend 8 foot trellis and frequent sucker pinching) that produces fruit continuously from July until the frost. We pack our freezer with San Marzanos for use in sauces all winter long.

Apios americana, called Sipekne’ in Mi’kmaq or American Groundnut in English, a native legume cultivated here by the Mi’kmaw people in woodlands and along stream-beds since time immemorial. It has tubers joined together along thin roots like a string of beads which can be harvested and eaten like a potato. It grows enormous vines and beautiful puce inflorescences every summer. A tremendous plant.

Trout lily (Erythronium americanum) has delicate, canary yellow blossoms which look like ballet skirts nodding from reddish stems. Close to the ground are mottled green and brown leaves which resemble a brook trout – the source of its name. A spring ephemeral, it blooms for a short season in May when days are long but temperatures are cool. Once the summer heat arrives, it dies back for another season.

A Corkscrew Hazel (Corylus avellana 'Contorta') in snowy winter. Corkscrew hazel is a shrub with branches that twist and coil. They are very pretty in summer when in foliage, but they really shine as winter interest.

A mixed planter of Cuphea ignea (Cigar flower) ‘Hummingbird’s Lunch,’ with Elymus hystrix (Bottlebrush grass) in a pot placed in a fire pit. Hummingbird’s Lunch is a long-blooming cultivar with long, slender red blooms tipped with cream. They are not frost-hardy, but in northern climates can be grown as an annual. They can reach 40-45 cm in one season and bloom from June until the frost! They are highly attractive to hummingbirds, hawkmoths, and other long-tongued insects.

Physalis (Ground Cherry) is a nightshade native to South America, which produces beautiful golden fruits enclosed in papery husks. The plants are large and beautiful in their own right, with extensive branching and lush foliage. The fruit is edible when ripe, and tastes like a cross between a tomato and a grape. You will know the fruit is ripe when it falls off the plant easily (hence ground cherry). They are more drought-resistant than tomatoes and do not seem to suffer from blossom-end rot. Beautiful snacking fruits and would probably also make a lovely jam (although the fruit rarely makes it from our garden to the kitchen without being eaten first).

The yellow umbel of Zizia aurea (Golden Alexanders) visited by a mining bee. Zizia is a native host plant for Black Swallowtails and an early-blooming spring nectar plant for a wide variety of pollinators.

Zinnia ‘Peppermint Stick’ is a variety of zinnia that produces candy striped double and semi double blooms which make excellent cut flowers. This blossom is cream with pink stripes, but this variety has seemingly endless colour combinations. #zinnia #cutflowers

On these snowy days we’re hanging onto memories of last summer’s gardens and planning next year’s. This was a strawflower (Xerochrysum) and great blue Lobelia (L. siphilitica) combo that was one of our unplanned favourites.

Pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritaceae) in front of larkspur (Delphinium sp.). Pearly everlasting is a potent attractor of pollinator insects and a host plant to Vanessa butterflies (the American lady and Painted lady in our region). A member of the aster family (Asteraceae), pearly everlasting has silvery foliage and clusters of white flowers in mid-late summer that resemble paws in bud form and open with papery blooms that do not turn brown when dried for winter bouquets. They are incredibly drought tolerant and will thrive in nutrient deplete, gravelly or sandy soil. We recommend pairing them with drought-tolerant neighbours that have blue or violet blooms (e.g. larkspur, lavender, or Russian sage). The white flowers and silver foliage of pearly everlasting will make your blue flowers pop from a distant gaze. Pearly everlasting spreads vigorously by root, so give them some room and divide regularly in spring or fall. Seeds benefit greatly from a cold treatment for germination, but we have found division to be the easiest method of propagation (as they spread so rapidly that it needs doing anyway).

Lobelia siphilitica / great blue lobelia, a lovely herbaceous perennial native to the northeast region of Turtle island. We often find bumblebee bottoms sticking out of the zygomorphic blooms. They are one of the truest blue flowers on our property and have an attractive, tall, mounded habit.

Double Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) with fully double white blossoms in spring. The olive green hepatiform leaves rise on sturdy stems from the earth. In cool temperatures the plant remains green, but it will die back when hot summer days come.

Delosperma echinatum (Pickle Plant), a succulent with fleshy leaves that resemble gherkin pickles. They look like they have sharp prickles on each leaf, but in reality they are very soft. In early summer they produce cream daisy-like blooms. They are not cold hardy but make a wonderful houseplant!

Lavandula angustifolia ‘Krajova’, a classic purple variety of true lavender, which possibly originated in Czechia (and certainly thrives in northern climates). Soft foliage (shaped almost like short, broad needles) grows off the woody subshrub base. It is topped by 15-20 cm flower spikes in midsummer (mid-July here in zone 5a). The flower buds are dark purple, and the open blooms are light and bright lavender. Plants reach up to 1 m in spread and 50-60 cm in height when full grown (3rd-5th summer).
