Good chance boar were brought to Ireland by people in the Mesolithic, but there's better things to do with a pig than coddle.

Just read a really interesting paper on massive feasts at Newgrange c.2500BC, where everyone was eating pigs that had been specially fattened on nuts to be extra tasty.

An excerpt from "A Natural History of Ireland, in Three Parts" by Gerard Boate and Thomas Molyneux, accessed from Google Books. It describes Newgrange, a Neolithic site in Ireland for which I am researching. It contains some funny old timey font that makes 's' look like an 'f', leading to some difficulty reading. Highlighted is "faln", and interesting spelling of the word fallen!

Neglect the famous Irish instrument builders, Grubb! Who, among other things, built the telescope that Eddington used to measure the GR deflection of starlight in the 1919 eclipse!

And while we’re talking about builders, we can’t forget Newgrange, the 5500 year old astronomically aligned mound

I drew a line from #Newgrange to Lough Muskry & carried an equal length line across the country north westward until I hit something significant, which was the Reek, Croak Patrick; I carried the same length across east to Newgrange & it went through #Rathcroghan & #Loughcrew

Nicky and i both love ancient history and these were really exciting to see. The inside vault of newgrange never collapsed or admitted water— it has kept structural integrity for thousands of years. The carvings on stones here resemble ones in brittany; the entrances align w solar events

We also went to newgrange and knowth, really shockingly well preserved neolithic sites used by at least two separate neolithic groups over a couple thousand years before becoming mysterious mounds graffittied in the 19th and excavated in the mid 20th century

I’ve read there’s evidence of Roman trade with Ireland. Coins, jewellery and other stuff has been found in loads of places, even Newgrange. So some might have visited for a bit of shopping. And some Romans, like St. Patrick, made it to Ireland as slaves.
