#methodism
Having grown up mostly amid strict chapel Methodism (in which saints are pure idolatry), I take joy in claiming my saint’s day & its association during the dark days with generous giving to the overlooked & the small. St Nic is also the patron saint of whores & I say god/dess bless us every one.
and best of all, standing like an eternal guardian next to her shoe, a magnificent milk chocolate Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, defender of the small, protector of the vulnerable, bringer of joy in the darkest and coldest of times.

The charming and picturesque village of Pill, on the North Somerset banks of the Avon has a long and noble history, including being home to many centuries of skilled boat pilots. However, John Wesley - the founder of Methodism - was less impressed when, in 1755 he wrote:

"Methodism means Method, but it also means moral fire".

I joined David Runciman on @ppfideas.bsky.social to talk about the making of Margaret Thatcher: what did she believe, where did she come from, what did she do in power?

And why did a prime minister who believed in "ideas" distrust "ideology"?
NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!

Today’s ep in our occasional series about momentous political anniversaries with historian @robertsaunders.bsky.social looks at the life & legacy of Margaret Thatcher 100 years on from her birth. What made Thatcher such a distinctive politician?

in addition to Young's (predictably) excellent introduction to Nicaea and its contours, the forum includes 10 "paired" scholars reflecting on the meaning and legacy of the council from various denominational perspectives

BTW, John Wesley, founder of Methodism, described "gamers" as taking advantage of others and tricking them out of their money. He viewed gambling as a form of "virtual theft" and a way of preying on one's neighbors, depending on others losing their money.

Zimbabwe MAIN STORY: The splintering in the UMC is just the latest obstacle for United Methodism in Zimbabwe, and that it’s managed to overcome.
Out there, we witnessed the church's legacy of liberation and what it means for a landmark change in Africa: www.tennessean.com/story/news/r...

Next, cause I was raised in Methodism, is the United Methodist cross-and-flame. This rocks. It’s so distinctive and sharp. It makes you want to sing “Come, Holy Ghost, Our Hearts Inspire.”

Why the oft-repeated observation that the Labour Party owes “more to Methodism than Marxism” annoys Neil Kinnock

they're all splitters, probably in r/calvinism r/methodism r/baptists r/adventists

i think it's underexplored that one of the things you can historically do as a "post-marxist" is Methodism, which did significantly provide a major historical base for Labour, in large part because of its internal logic and commitments,

On Saturday, my colleague Andrew Nelles and I witnessed the UMC Zimbabwe East Annual Conference as it voted on whether to ratify a plan to restructure the denomination. Here's what it showed us about Zimbabweans' level of enthusiasm for United Methodism: www.tennessean.com/story/news/r...
What a United Methodist conference in Zimbabwe says about churches' desire to stay in UMC
Whereas United Methodists in some parts of Africa are leaving the denomination following a costly splintering, Zimbabweans' zeal is resolute.

Ever since I learnt of the existence of Methodism I have never for a moment ceased to imagine my gaggles of hypothetical Methodists.

What chance did Wesleyan Methodism have against this?

I mean, seriously?

Adjusting for education, age and density interactions plus job occupation there’s not much else going on; except for 2 things. Welsh speaking areas of wales, and Liberal Democrat challenge areas (which applies +15 to their vote). Reason behind latter more to do with non conformism / Methodism

Showcasing the diversity of Methodism is great - I'm fully on board - but given the audience in the room wasn't 90% Caribbean & West African, maybe unsurprising it didn't work for everyone?

Anglicanism was the least prominent however, and like many industrial communities it made inroads very late compared to Methodism.

As (something of) a (United) Methodist, definitely. The ones who are more into it definitely are splitting off into Global Methodism. Which I'm kinda glad about, because we don't need the fundamentalist dipshittery in the United Methodist church, IMHO.

Methodism followed by Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses. The three dominant religions in the Pacific Islands. I should know, I'm 25% Polynesian 😱🤣

me thinks readers of blood Methodism focus to much on the Gnosticism aspect of the book they end up overlooking others details

So Wiki says. Is it possible that that's the reason Americans think it's a British name? John Wesley and Methodism?

The reason he was able to escape for so long is that he got work aboard a schooner whose captain was a recent convert to Methodism and so just didn’t ask him any questions, though he probably knew who he was the whole time.

Absolutely. The neat thing is how impt Methodism was in Cards. & nationally, but barely appears among my Cadrs. ancestors cause they were already part of the presbyterian/Arian/Unitarian movements. I was looking at the timeline going, only in this place would I have so much to say abt the Unitarians

That "Methodism" thing isn't gonna fly in Hollywood, though! Not when THOSE people run everything. You know the ones. Lutherans!
