KDE team has removed FreeBSD support due to systemd/logind. So, the question is can i use KDE without systemd even though it is linux? I mean there are #devuan #artix #guix and the others.

We rely on systemd/logind, so FreeBSD is not supported

This would be an okay argument if literally anything in Plasma had anything to do with init systems. The closest you'll get is IPC with logind (which is technically not even required on X11) but that doesn't need to be systemd, it can be anything and that's exactly what things like elogind exist for

KDE removed FreeBSD support from Plasma login manager stating that KDE/Plasma relies systemd(1)/logind(1) Linux daemons.

FreeBSD should not waste time to work on adding KDE/Plasma desktop install button in bsdinstall(8) installer.

Use MATE/XFCE instead.

i have very little time for people that complain about systemd's supposed monolithic, unavoidable nature.

1. i broke out logind 10 years ago, and since then others maintain it, it works fine: https://github.com/elogind/elogind

2. there are other init systems, i run the shepherd ( […]

Tweaking the Power Management configuration in the GUI did not resolve the issue.

I needed to change the logind configuration by adding these three lines to the config:

HandleLidSwitch=ignore
HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore
HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore

Spent some time diagnosing a 60s hang yesterday and it seems like it's due to systemd-logind using pidfd and getting confused about pid namespaces
November 20, 2025 at 7:44 PM
Sooo is systemd-logind completely broken inside containers with a separate PID namespace these days?

@dzwiedziu @stfn No chyba tak to wygląda.

rca: since the system was thrashing hard, a bunch of services timed out their dbus requests (????), including systemd-logind, which then restarted, took the seats for itself, causing Xorg to exit and take down everything with it. also broke my display manager somehow

Hot take: PipeWire shouldn't run as a per-user service. It should always run as a system service, under its own user, listening on a system-wide socket, and the currently logged-in user should be given access to that socket via logind or whatever handles such things now. Same for wireplumber and […]
