Thanks for everyone who gave me suggestions for my coding preschooler! We tried Lightbot and Scratch last night and I love them. He got a little overwhelmed, but he also managed to program a little story about a dog that got scared by a snake and barked at it. So... progress!

“Hands…? Crash… how did you even…” Heat shifted to a more quiet tone as he felt Crash’s hulking arms, searching for a way to possibly reveal these newfound hands. When he reached Crash’s bombs, he made sure to tread carefully, even with the knowledge that his bombs give him energy in mind. Eventually, Heat—his search proven fruitless—climbed onto his lover’s chest, looking into his green eyes. “Are you sure you’re not just playing a prank on me, babe?”

Crash wrapped his arms around the stout robot, tucking him into his embrace and whispering to him. “Forcing a Lightbot to do your bidding is easy when you put their life on the line.“ He nibbled on the side of Heat’s neck playfully, feeling him squirm in his grasp. The fiery robot let out a soft moan, not expecting the sudden advance, especially from a robot like Crash Man. Heat, still curious, asked, “Honey… What did you even do? How did you manage to get in? The security of Light’s lab is top notch… You would’ve been scrapped immediately!” Crash smirked, preparing to explain his little story.

“Well, it was as simple as catching a Lightbot by surprise. I found that one dressed in purple… You know, the one with that clock motif going on?” The robot lowered his head, averting his gaze from his partner, before picking it back up. “I subdued him and threatened to tear him to hell and back. Safe to say he listened.” Heat rested against his lover’s chest, listening to the soft whirr of his core. The sound of that core of his whirring was mesmerizing, but not as much as his speech. “Forced him to disable the security system, and once we were inside, I put him to work. Surprised he knew how to operate on Wilybots. It was like he’d done it before…”

“Really? You actually managed to do all of that?" Heat asked, impressed with his boyfriend's work. The fact he had actually done all of that without getting caught or worse, becoming the junkyard's newest attraction, had left him astonished. There was still one big question on his mind, however. And that was, "Crash… Where’s the hand, then? Where’s it hidden?” Heat asked impatiently, searching his arms yet again. His partner smiled softly, tilting his head to look at him. The tip of his bomb rested against Heat’s chin, the smile on Crash’s face spreading to his own. “You’re touching it.”

Slowly, his left arm turned 180 degrees. The end retracted into the arm, swapping out for a white hand. He hesitated for a moment, before placing it against Heat’s face. That was the first thing he had felt. The softness of his own partner’s face. The portly robot shuddered as this new hand brushed him, the thumb caressing his cheek. Crash stared at his lover like a deer in headlights, still trying to process this new sensation. "This feeling... it's... it's amazing... Is this what skin feels like? Have I been missing out on...this?"

I've explored a few coding games with my kid this year and the winner, far and away, is ~16-year-old (!) LightBot. The puzzles are tricky and interesting, and draw your attention to the right things. It teaches functions before loops! Great for kids, but not just for kids: lightbot.com

• Tynker:
A platform similar to Scratch with guided lessons and projects.

Sadly, I cannot find the post anymore. But we used Lightbot when the kids were younger and later on Scratch.

basic coding isn't that difficult. you play a game like lightbot or even the gambit system in ff12, then it's mostly down to learning syntax for the language you need to use.
