Besides the war, the Allies have other annoyances too, however. In the Belgian Congo, an uprising breaks out against the long history of brutal exploitation there - not likely to affect things much as the Belgians do have troops present, but a reminder of the war's wider context.

The ability to trace the path back to the origin of HIV-Leopoldville, a colonial town, and the approx. year 1920, was through old tissue samples, kept in a dusty lab in Africa.

Read "Chimp & The River: How AIDS Emerged from an African Forest" by David Quamman

Samples are valuable for scientists.

Strangely not; genetic analysis shows that AIDS crossed over to humans in Leopoldville sometime between 1880-1930 (most likely 1915-1920), but I'm unaware of anyone who's written specifically on the intersection of colonization and AIDS.
Aids: Origin of pandemic 'was 1920s Kinshasa'
The origin of the Aids pandemic has been traced back to 1920s Kinshasa, in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, scientists say.

Toen Janssen ging zwemmen in Leopoldville

@paninid I had to look up Katanga, it has an interesting history.

"The State of Katanga, also known as the Republic of Katanga, was a breakaway state that proclaimed its independence from Congo-Léopoldville on 11 July 1960 under Moise Tshombe, leader of the local CONAKAT political party. The […]
