Hi. Friendly reminder today as ICE is terrorizing multiple cities across the country at an accelerating pace—
Many of us are trying to get info out to locals in our areas *fast.* We do not always have time to explain neighborhoods/intersections to people thousands of miles away.

If your California city is saying that they can't actually paint curbs red to enforce AB 413 daylighting, point them to Berkeley.
We have red curbed over half of the 1,754 intersections in the city, with the goal of completing all intersections by early 2026.

Arresting people attending immigration hearings seems like the opposite of that.
Masked gunmen jumping out of cars to grab people in the middle of intersections seems like the opposite of that.

You can read more of Chrissy's work about the intersections of evangelical Christianity and culture, and the atheist movement, in this fantastic piece.

More Americans are secular than ever. Can the institutions meant to represent them keep up?

At several locations across the city where bike bus routes cross busy intersections, the Portland Bureau of Transportation has programmed traffic signals with a custom, bike bus-friendly timing plan that is activated by a longer push of the beg button.

A good series of points in this thread. Can't help thinking it's ironic that developer experience folks are so into the idea of cognitive load for themselves but apparently people working at the intersections of edtech and education aren't thinking about it for the children subject to their designs
I'm sure this has been written about somewhere, but as a parent I am struck by how much greater my high school kid's executive function is expected to be versus what was expected of me - and it's entirely because all his work is online. He has to not only do the work but submit... 1/8

Pleased to see this out in print - detailing MAIHDA's desirable statistical properties.
"MAIHDA is especially valuable when inequalities are subtle or data for marginalised intersections are sparse - conditions common in practice"

Quit waving people through intersections when you have the right-of-way. It isn't nice, nice would be you actually following fucking traffic laws
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

It's genuinely amazing and infuriating how much faster streetcars can clear intersections with TSP and dual point switches and without stop and inspect and slow orders

Also, if these dinguses would stop running red lights and bunging up intersections, perhaps people could travel more freely.

What's also fascinating about this map is that if you talk to the median Staten Islander voter about daylighting intersections, you actually might get assaulted. It's quite the metaphor for American politics these days.
The Staten Island Advance is continuing its "Staten Island Traffic SOS," mapping out the crashes that killed 55 (!!) Islanders since 2021.
Few neighborhoods are spared tragedy, but most public officials on the Island worry about traffic, and not traffic violence.

It’s generally culturally based, especially with bias towards people on the lower socioeconomic strata with a lot of racial intersections. It’s gross for so many reason.

Dear MoCo Drivers, wtf are y’all doing this morning? Please yield (that means wait) for people crossing on foot — in marked crosswalks at controlled intersections with the walk light in broad fucking daylight. Any kind of encouragement from the PTB would be super appreciated.

A couple years ago, during a team retreat in Bentonville, I learned that one of our longtime @stlbworks.bsky.social volunteers was my spouse's high school Spanish teacher in #STL! Now he helps guide our bike buses, including today's.

Yep. I'm a walker & need to figure out how to attach reflectors & lights to me. Crossing intersections is dangerous — even those with walk-lights. Drivers act like they're unaware that walkers even exist. I've taken to carrying a flashlight, which I wave around when crossing the street.
With shorter days, I’ve added accessories to make me more visible when biking: spoke reflectors, light on back of helmet, and pedal lights. I also have a good headlight & a rear light. Basically hoping moths don’t start driving, human drivers pay attention, and we get some damn protected bike lanes.

The obvious solution is to grade separate as much of the line as possible, but that's a multi-billion dollar proposition.
Absent that, Brightline and the state could improve safety by closing some intersections, increasing fencing, and improving crossing gates.

Improvements are coming to 8th Ave NW in Ballard. We will start by “daylighting” intersections to increase visibility. Next year, we’ll do more to make it safer to bike, walk, drive, and roll along the street: https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2025/10/20/upgrades-to-8th-ave-nw-in-ballard-safer-travel/
