Reed, before the main story, having a conversation in two languages at the same time. Neither of them English.

"You dreamin of your girl again?" M'boyo teased.
"Hm?" Reed blinked.
"You haven't even been drinking. Must've really lost your heart to her!"
Reed snorted. "I ain't got a heart to begin with."
M'boyo looked over with a smirk. "I'm pretty sure she'd be upset to hear that."
"A coyote doesn't howl at the moon anyway," Fila said in Durrish as she perched on the seat next to him.
Snorting, Reed looked at her with a raised brow. "And I'm the coyote?"
"Certainly not a wolf. Though you claimed to be raised by them." Fila dropped into Hannish.
"No? What's the difference?" Reed challenged, taking a drink from his cup.
"Wolves take care of their pack."
"Ouch." Reed looked away, "What've I done to make you think I don't?"
"You didn't come back. Layla has missed you."
"Didn't think I was welcome. Y'all been ignoring me whenever you see me," Reed retorted. "Street's two ways."
Fila looked aside, then leaned her arms on the bar, picking her filthy nails. "...They don't trust your intentions."
Rolling his eyes, Reed knocked back the last of his whisky and fished his money out to pay. "Not much I can do about that."
"You could explain?" Fila looked at him.
"Explain what? I ain't got a plan."
"Maybe just provide enough for the children?" Fila's expression twisted in grief. She was begging now.

"Lorrie," the redheaded girl called from the bedroom. "Reed and Patrick were here earlier." She started giggling. "Reed is so weird. He crawled around on the floor like he was sniffing for a fox. Then they said Prince Solace walked! How absurd is that? Oh, his chair is out here. Did you get him on the bench by yourself?"
Setting the remains of the sticky glass aside, Lorrie put her fists on her hips, looking down at him. "All of it," she told him.
"I need to catch my breath," Solace objected.
"We've only a few hours to get you ready, and given how slow you are, it's going to take that whole time. Hurry up," Lorrie reminded.
"Lorrie?" Marigold called from the bedroom. "Who're you talking to? Do you need help?" Marigold’s voice trailed off.
“Have you overcome your fear?” Solace asked as he shuffled to get the last remaining item off and tossed it toward the basket. He couldn’t help but grin.
The noise in the bedroom had ceased. "Lorrie?" Marigold slowly peeked around the door frame.
"A gentle breeze can knock you over. I think I can outrun you,” Lorrie retorted.
Solace chuckled. “Given how swiftly you fled earlier, yes. You most assuredly can. Though I promise never to raise my hand against you.” Leaning his forearms on his knees, he tipped his head to look at Marigold.
Marigold withdrew.
A thump resounded from the bedroom.
Lorrie sighed, got a bucket of water from the tub and set it, a soap block, and a washcloth near Solace. She went to deal with the other woman. Starting with his hair, he scrubbed his scalp and worked the suds down to the ends. Meanwhile, he could hear Lorrie speaking.
"He's moving on his own?" Marigold asked, voice trembling. "You told him to bathe himself?"
She burst into the bathing room, hands on her face in horror. "No!"
