That is a nice mushroom.
It kind of reminds me of hoarfrost or hairice the way its growing out of the end of the wood.

Rare ‘frost beard’ ice formation discovered by a hiker: The winter chill in early January surprised many across England this year. On January 11, 2025, a casual walk through the Devil’s Punch Bowl turned into a moment of astonishment.

✨ A magical winter moment! ✨ While walking, the kids pointed out “strange snow piles,” but it wasn’t snow! It turned out to be #hairice, fragile icy threads formed by fungi on dead wood. It melts like snow in the sun! So glad I had my camera to capture it!

Check out this #HairIce aka #FrostBeard or #IceWool
Formed by the #fungus #ExidiopsisEffusa on dead, barkless branches of broadleaf 🌳. Forms when temp is slightly below 🥶, air is humid & fungus is present on the wood.
Fungus releases 💧 from the wood >> freezes into very fragile hair-like strands

Why tag this with #FungiFriday? I hear you ask
Well... #HairIce is rare and to form it requires humid air slightly below freezing, moist rotting wood from a broadleaf tree and the #fungus Exidiopsis effusa, which inhibits recrystallisation

Hair Ice found growing on fallen twigs and branches along the River Esk in Midlothian today. Hair ice forms on moist, rotting wood from broadleaf trees when temperatures are slightly under 0 °C (32 °F), air is humid and wood is infected with the fungus Exidiopsis effusa. #Fungi #Mycology #HairIce

This morning, I spotted Hair Ice in Whatcom County. I took a cold drive around a wooded area to see if I could find anything interesting to photograph and came across this cool sight along the way 🧊

Hair ice is a rare type of ice formation where the presence of a particular fungus in rotting wood produces thin strands of ice which resemble hair or candy floss. The conditions required for the formation are extremely specific, hence the relative scarcity of sightings. #hairice #ijshaar

"Hair Ice Fireworks"
Water oozes thru pores of rotting wood from broadleaf trees & instantly freezes in mid-air (latitudes 45-55°N, high humidity, just below freezing, & only if fungus Exidiopsis effusa is present).
Rare & wondrous.

I’m lucky to have found #HairIce (hair ice) multiple times over the years. Favours rotting wood in deciduous woodlands. Perfect conditions for this wee phenomenon are just below freezing when air has been humid. ❄️. I took photo because of the silky, curly, almost like candy floss formation. 🩵

Magical morning at Puijo forest (Eastern Finland):
hair ice all over the forest floor 😍 never seen as many formations as today!
Hair ice formatiin requires very special conditions (humid air & T<0'C), the fungi Exidiopsis effusa, and typically dead wood as a platform.
