A lot of it reads as people outgrowing GoW, which I get but first impressions so far are better than 3 and even RAAM's Shadow which I thought was a better example of Gears' strengths.

Thanks to inspo from @tolariancommunitycollege.com we played 3+ hours of Pai Gow tonight and it ruled. Opened 9 packs each.
Went 4-4-1, and our tiebreaker strategy was incredible. Shuffled up all the cards we opened and got to hand pick our starting 7.
Wild.

I remember a dev interview for God of War (2005) where they were respectfully like "yeah DMC and NG got deeper combat going on than we do, and we're not really trying to compete with them" only to sell millions, inadvertently planting the seed for fanbase elitism by self-styling GoW as more casual

The brother armorers in GoW Ragnarok are fully fleshed. They guide the story, they show don't tell, they're given autonomy and background and facetime. They're just as fleshed out and have maybe even more personality, tbh, than Kratos himself.

For 3D ones, I was a PlayStation 2 kid so had early exposure to DmC, KH and old GoW. I found Ghost of Yotei surprisingly good? Like, it's not DmC but it felt like Doom Eternal for 3D action games, needing to switch between the different answers quickly made my brain zappy.

It's quite funny that GoW '18 is, justifiably, the poster boy for a lot of cinematic trends but, at the same time, at least they kept hitbox-based collision instrad of pairing animations like Spiderman or Batman did.

I understand why people don't like the Nu-GoW games but the combat engine in Ragnarok feels like driving a luxury vehicle when it's firing on cylinders and you're swapping between all of your weapons and managing the battlefield at close, medium, and long range all at once, nothing else like it.
it’s been on my mind lately, how to do a better job framing these games as accessible and fun (because they are! they’re fun and i like them!) without scaring people away and calling every big they like slop for idiots. this is hard cause we really do not want to be polite to god of war (2018)

The game is entirely built around combat and, IMHO, it is mostly rebranded 4e. A large group of players are more into the interpersonal drama and found family tropes, sometimes proudly declaring they gow they can playa an entire campaign without a single fight o even rolling dice
