On this day in 2021, WaderTales was celebrating a new Bar-tailed Godwit subspecies.

Today, Jesse Conklin tells us about 2 subspecies that have started to hybridise after 16,000 years separation.

Daybreak in the wreck of Dogger. Gulls drifting
over the slowly rising sea. Seals hauled out
on sandbanks, bleached ribs of stranded whales.
Dunlin and knot, swarming the mudflats,
armies of silt-spearing godwit and whaup.

Left to right: a bar-tailed godwit, a curlew facing the camera, and a little egret. We’re seeing more egrets this year on the Isle of Bute 💚

It's a Bar tailed Godwit more identification features would be shown on a side view, but this bird has an obvious supercilium (eyebrow),which is a give away feature

Taken from the Steel hide at Llanelli WWT, I think this is a Black Tailed Godwit. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, it's all part of the learning curve. 🪶 #birdingwales #ukbirding

🙏 That Godwit Fest was something else. I must have taken many hundreds of bird pics, but had a hard time sorting thru them. Back when I had the shutter clicking as long as I held it down. Then TOO TOO MANY pics that were too much alike to sort through. I hate making the choices, but I'm trying. 🥴
