Wolfwood with a gaunt, unamused put-upon expression that is endearing and humorous. He’s rolling his eyes at himself, inwardly cringing, after remembering his impulsive hubris on the rooftop right before, when, overwhelmed with how trapped he felt by his situation and the danger the twins’ conflict puts his kiddos/humanity in, he pointed a gun at vash behind vash’s back and had thought ‘is it that easy to eliminate half the threat?’ Obviously the answer is no <3. This panel takes place right after fighting literally back-to-back with vash, defending each other and attacking with such fluidity and unity that there’s the impression wolfwood got lost in the teamwork sauce until vash bumped his shoulder. the sudden contact jolted him into awareness of vash’s strength, ability, and prowess to the point where he realizes how dumb it was to think he could sneak up on vash before. Vash obviously knew what wolfwood was doing; more vitally, though, wolfwood is hit with fully realizing that vash still trusts him enough to have his back to wolfwood (and, as we see in the fight above, for wolfwood to defend vash's back). He’s annoyed at himself for being foolish in multiple regards, but also undeniably a bit soft-hearted over this (probably going to process it later lol), as he goes from extremely keyed-up high-alert to Big Sigh. every time i see pictures of myself from my early 20s i always notice how gaunt and sad i looked. i was 22 here, about half a year out of undergrad, and i was really starting to think my life would never amount to anything. i've come SUCH a long way at 31 it's almost hard to believe.

The slow performance of the man's turn was a gently parting curtain, eerie glow of the candles revealing his features as if it was written dramaturgy; an indolent reveal so those in the back might see the spectacle of it. Firstly, and most arresting, was the striking anomaly of his eyes; starkly mismatched. The left a black deep and embracing as night, the right the color of honey warmed by sun. They crinkled with an affection that felt so alien, to be directed at D'Artagnan, who felt small under his gaze. The grace of the man's years etched deeply and dearly on his skin, tanned tawny, taupe shimmering golden where the light kissed each immaculately structured feature; little of his face spoke tender save for his gently admonishing expression. All else of his features struck sharp and gaunt, a bold bone structure, his aquiline nose at a handsome slope, the winsome laugh lines beside his mouth cut deep and lent his face a wizened handsomeness. He grinned with a sensuous, generous mouth, its corners upturned commas belying years of secretive smiles. And by the angled upward slope of his lengthened ears, D'Artagnan knew this man to be an Elezen like himself. "How fares the land of the Fury's Chosen? T'was too many turns ago when last I saw Her spires… how else might I know you as Hers so readily?
