I used to think a ‘perfect’ photo had to be:
• Razor-sharp.
• Perfectly exposed.
• Technically flawless.

Then I realized:
Emotion > Perfection.

Now, I shoot for the feeling—and my work has never been better.

This photograph was made at Bromley Rock Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada near the town of Princeton in 2013. The picture is a close-up of tree roots beside the Similkameen River. Chloé Cooper Jones was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, philosophy professor, Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant recipient—a groundbreaking memoir about disability, motherhood, and a journey to far-flung places in search of a new way of seeing and being seen.
