PS, before "reciprocal" tariffs linked macro balances to bilateral trade, the traditional approach to macroeconomics for food policy is chapter 9 of the #FoodEconomics book. We'll need a second edition soon, right @afinaret.bsky.social?
Food in the Macroeconomy: The Whole is More Than the Sum of its Parts
This chapter shows how the food system interacts with society and the economy as a whole. That larger macroeconomy involves the circular flow of goods and services exchanged among people within each c...

Yes this. There’s pain coming for sure but longer term I’m curious about potential benefits. Who is doing work on how the potential new tariffs could undo some of the damages to #foodsystems from free trade policies? #foodeconomics #foodpolicy #tradepolicy
I will say that tomatoes really are an example of something where — if you can afford it, which I realize is a major issue for a lot of people — doing some import substitution by shopping at the farmers market might not only make financial sense but will also be way more delicious
Fun fact: “The average American eats about 20 pounds of fresh tomatoes per year, two-thirds of which now come from Mexico.”

Making American food healthy again, one step at a time: the @fda.gov published its updated rule on which products can have the word "healthy" on their label, at www.fda.gov/healthy.

A break from the news -- high schooler Amelia Cho has a fun podcast about food, asking lots of great questions about #FoodEconomics research & teaching. Excellent earlier interviews include @dlortega.bsky.social, Michael Jacobson about the @nationalfoodmuseum.bsky.social, etc., all on Substack:
Ep. 11 Co-author of 'Food Economics' and Tufts University Professor of Food/Nutrition Policy and Economics
"Once you do economics enough to appreciate its virtues, you realize that it's just a profoundly human endeavor that's deeply rooted in culture and history of health and nutrition."

6/10 Canadian counter-tariffs strategically target items with domestic alternatives. "They put them on things that were highly substitutable," explains University of Guelph food economist Mike von Massow, allowing flexibility for cost-conscious consumers.

Nice paper on food choice in a lab's grocery store, finding that a front-of-pack label drives switch to healthier options more effectively than prices.
Why? Consumers want health, but often don't know or are misled about what's in each food. #NutriScore helps.
#EconSky X #FoodSky = #FoodEconomics

How do public policies stack up? Is the impact of two policies larger than the sum of its parts?
We look at this in the context of food - labels + price policies - & find they are *extremely* sub-additive.
Also, labels do way better than prices.
