What is the Aurora? Aurora is the name given to the glow or light produced when electrons from space flow down Earth’s magnetic field and collide with atoms and molecules of the upper atmosphere in a ring or oval centered on the magnetic pole of Earth. The collisions produce light much like how electrons flowing through gas in a neon light collide with neon and other gasses to produce different colored light bulbs. The Aurora is also called the Northern Lights in the northern hemisphere and Southern Lights in the southern hemisphere. The technical term for the Northern Lights is Aurora Borealis and the Southern lights are called the Aurora Australis. The word Aurora was first used by Galileo and comes from Latin and is the name of the goddess of dawn. The word Borealis comes from the Latin word boreal which means “northern” or “from the north”. The word Australis is Latin for austral, which means “southern.” What Causes the Aurora? The aurora is formed from interactions between the solar wind streaming out from the sun and Earth’s protective magnetic field, or magnetosphere. The aurora is one manifestation of geomagnetic activity or geomagnetic storms. As the solar wind increases in speed and the interplanetary magnetic field embedded in the solar wind turns southward, the geomagnetic activity will increase and the aurora will become brighter, more active, and move further from the poles. Even moderate solar wind creates aurora so there is usually a weak aurora somewhere even when there isn’t a big geomagnetic storm.

Got up early & headed over to the Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawai'i today. Driving through lava fields where you can still see the lava flow pattern in the black rock is mind blowing. And I'm definitely going to need the extra backpack I brought :)

Life is the Life by Richard H. Fay Roused from decades of sepulchral slumber By savage cannonades and rifle fire, Departing the dark comfort of my tomb, I roam a mad world ripped apart by war. Venturing forth like a smoky blue veil Wafting across this cratered countryside, Searching for the base essence of being, I am drawn to fields of lingering death. Drifting amidst battle-broken bodies, Ignoring agonizing cries of pain, Invisible to dimming mortal eyes, I harvest embers of vitality. Between 2017 and 2021, the peak brightness shifted along the ring: this movement is due to the accretion flow, a turbulent vortex of plasma falling toward the black hole, influenced by powerful magnetic fields that change over time.

Dear members of the Northwestern community, With the new academic year upon us, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the core of our mission - to create space for teaching and learning, where ideas flow freely, we learn from one another and push each other to create and discover. This pursuit happens every day — all around us — in classrooms and labs, on stages and playing fields. However, in our increasingly polarized world, at times we experience pain, confusion and challenging situations. With that in mind, it's important to know the policies listed below that facilitate healthy dialogue, respectful disagreement and the exchange of ideas so that we can do our best work as students, faculty and staff. We encourage everyone to take the time to read through these documents fully. Demonstration Policy The Demonstration Policy includes requirements and guidance on how, when and where members of the community may protest or otherwise engage in expressive activity. The policy prohibits overnight demonstrations and limits activity that disrupts classes and other functions of the University, including prohibiting demonstrations at the Rock before 3 p.m. on weekdays and the use of amplified sound in that area before 5 p.m. The Display and Solicitation Policy sets clear rules and requirements for on-campus displays, including flyers, banners, chalking and 3-D installations. The policy establishes designated areas for flyers, chalking and other displays and details when the University removes displays. This policy also prohibits the use of tents (with exceptions for University-sponsored events and for the purposes of guarding and painting the Rock), light displays and chalking on buildings. Signs that violate laws and other University policies are prohibited. The Student Handbook, which contains the Student Code of Conduct (page 9), is updated each year. As a reminder, last year we made several policy changes, including: - An Intimidation Standard that explicitly prohibits subjecting another person or group to abusive, demeaning, harassing, humiliating, intimidating, threatening or violent behavior that substantially affects the ability of the person or group to learn, work or live in the University environment. Examples of violations to this policy include physical threats, verbal or written communication to threaten violence, the use of symbols, words or graphics to threaten violence, acts of doxing, and abusive behavior toward a University official or agent acting in performance of their duties, among others. It also prohibits engaging in abusive, demeaning, harassing, humiliating, intimidating or threatening behavior that excludes a student from joining or participating in a student organization. • The Failure to Comply Standard includes specific examples and to make clear that students are required to comply with the requests, directives and instructions of University officials acting in performance of their duties. Under this policy, students must identify themselves, including removing face masks or coverings for purposes of identification when asked by an authorized University official who is addressing law or policy violations and health or safety concerns. The Misuse of University Properties policy defines misuse, including unauthorized access to athletics fields and construction sites and attending or participating in an event in University spaces that violates the policies governing that space. - The Destruction of Property Standard defines what applies under this policy to include tampering with University property. Faculty and staff are encouraged to review their respective handbooks. Each member of the Northwestern community is expected to interact with each other with respect and consideration. Additional Policies In addition to the policies above, we want to remind you about the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance (OCR) policies concerning discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct: • Policy on Discrimination, Harassment, and Sexual Misconduct: This policy covers a wide range of discriminatory and harassing behaviors, including those based on race, ethnicity, religion, sex and other protected characteristics. • Policy on Title IX Sexual Harassment: This policy specifically addresses sexual harassment and sexual misconduct consistent with Title IX. • Reasonable Accommodation Policy: This policy explains the availability of accommodations for students, employees, job applicants, visitors and other third parties on the bases of disability, pregnancy, lactation and religion. • Reporting by University Employees of Disclosures Related to Discrimination and Harassment: This policy sets out the reporting requirements for employees when they learn about discrimination, harassment and sexual

Day 2 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1214 AM CST Tue Mar 04 2025 Valid 051200Z - 061200Z ...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WEDNESDAY ACROSS PARTS OF EASTERN SOUTH CAROLINA...EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA AND SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA... ...SUMMARY... An intensifying line of thunderstorms may become capable of producing strong, damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes as it overspreads the eastern Carolinas and southeastern Virginia mid Wednesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. ...Discussion... The center of a broad and deep, occluding surface cyclone still appears likely to migrate across the lower Great Lakes region into southwestern Quebec during this period. Associated strong lower/mid-tropospheric wind fields are likely to impact a broad area east of the Rockies through the Atlantic Seaboard, initially including south-southwesterly flow on the order of 50-70+ kt around 850 mb, east of deepening surface troughing to the lee of the Blue Ridge. It appears that this jet core will gradually shift eastward into and across the Mid Atlantic coast by late afternoon, well in advance of the primary cold front, which might not advance east of the Appalachians until Wednesday evening. Guidance continues to indicate that more the substantive low-level moisture return off a modifying Gulf boundary layer will become cut off across the northeastern Gulf vicinity by early Wednesday. However, it remains suggestive that a developing return flow off the Atlantic will augment moistening across and inland the Carolina coast. Models also continue to indicate that destabilization through much of the warm sector may only become supportive of weak CAPE on the order of 500 J/kg or less. However, given the strength of the wind fields, and areas of stronger forcing for ascent, there appears at least a conditional risk for severe thunderstorm activity across a broad area. ...Southern Mid Atlantic... It still appears that a remnant convective band emerging from the eastern Gulf States will be maintained, with potential for substantive intensification as it advances across the Carolina Piedmont through Carolina and southeastern Virginia coastal plain Wednesday morning into afternoon. Although forecast soundings continue to indicate that lower/mid-tropospheric lapse rates will not become particularly steep ahead of this convection, it does appear that boundary-layer warming and moistening (including surface dew points increasing into the lower 60s) will contribute to near-surface thermodynamic profiles conducive to downward momentum transport. Given the rather large and clockwise curved low-level hodographs, a few tornadoes (perhaps a strong tornado or two) are possible, in additional to scattered straight-line wind gusts in excess of 65 kt. ...Allegheny Plateau/Mid Atlantic... Early period convective precipitation may contribute to boundary-layer moistening, prior to the onset of increasing insolation beneath a dry slot overspreading the region during the day. Followed by the onset of stronger cooling aloft, model forecast soundings indicate the development of thermodynamic profiles characterized by modest conditional and convective instability, in the presence of strong deep-layer shear.
