Dissociating and playing with floof. Idk how every week of this admin is worse than the last.

I don’t remember anything about this breed except that it’s endearingly called Mega Mutt; @royalbb.bsky.social do you remember? I acquired 1 lb from Nellie some time ago after having trouble scouring my lanolin-heavy merino & felt like I needed an easier-to-work-with fleece (2/n)

Having a drum carder is making me into a different person. I’m giving scouring another try. (1/n)

Alternatively, putting the silk down first and then wool on top also worked as well as sandwiching! (8/n)

Per @senesced.bsky.social ‘s recommendation, I sandwiched the silk (similar amount) in between wool. This was great success! Everything got transferred over to the main drum (7/n)

I tried adding only a very lil amount of silk. But when fed in on top of the wool like shown below, I still found that most of the silk would stay on the licker-in. (6/n)

I decided to blend the leftover bombyx silk from the Guts I carded last weekend with this Corriedale. What I didn’t have last time was patience, due to too much excitement. This time around I’m trying to load up as much patience I can muster up 😇 (5/n)

25ish grams of washed fleece on the bottom, and 25ish grams of picked open fleece on the top! The first couple weeks I had my carder, I was so impatient to card that I picked quickly in haste but today I took a couple hours to do it slowly & it felt so relaxing 😌 (4/n)

@mellyknits.bsky.social has a super informative video on picking wool, if you’re interested (linked below)! I learned a lot from this video and that’s what I’m doing with my Corriedale (washed by Melly too!) right now. (3/n)

I’m picking it open with my hands (instead of using my Lock Pop, which I also love) because I want to maximize feeling the wool texture. It can be very soothing to focus on the texture your hands are feeling and I’m craving that today. (2/n)

Next up is 50g of Corriedale! @pacific-coaster.bsky.social picked it up for me from Fibres West 2023(?) and it’s been waiting for its spa time for a while now. I still haven’t spun my carded batts but I really felt like touching more wool this morning. (1/n)

After trying blending sari silk and bombyx silk in my first couple of carding projects, I wanted to do 100% wool for my next one. This is Bond washed by Clemes and Clemes (their Good Clean Fiber). It indeed was v good and v clean, almost no VMs even! (1/n)

This is how the washed fleece looked before carding. I carded all the fleece, but only used about one third or half of the silk (5-7g). I hope to blend it with some other project in the future. (3/n)

It was my first time carding (or touching!) gulf coast native and it was a dream: so soft, so POUFY! It’s my first time carding anything on my own independently these days, but I’ve done cvm once before in a class. Love the smooth texture of cvm tooooo (2/n)

My first carded up @mellyknits.bsky.social Guts 🍵 blending 15g of bombyx silk was a bit daunting for me so I blended a lil bit and fed the silk directly onto the main drum. The silk streaks turned out quite cute though! (1/n)

🧵 After a buttload of stubbornness, I managed to pull off three batts. I’m really happy with the color and feel 💖 it wasn’t easy, but why should anything be easy on the first try, is the attitude I shall live by, I guess. Good thing I’m stubborn? 🤷 (7/n)

🧵 Packing down the fiber on the main drum with a cat brush helped a lot, (afterwards I ordered a burnishing brush) but it didn’t resolve the problem completely. Not pictured, but the romney continued to not get transferred to the main drum. Any tips? (6/n)

🧵 Perhaps picking a longwool as my first drum carding project wasn’t such a smart idea. With silk, even. What was I thinking?! It was hard and I got my butt kicked. I constantly got so much fiber stuck on the licker-in! (5/n)

🧵 Per the advice, I started feeding much less fiber in. It definitely worked so much better! HOWEVER I painfully learned that I shouldn’t feed fiber too close to the edges like I have in the pic. I got so much fiber stuck in the crevices of the carder 😵‍💫 (4/n)

🧵 This was the very first fiber that went into my new carder. Friends advised later that I should be putting ~ 1/3 of what I have pictured. The less, the better, when it comes to carding. And I remembered, that was a big theme in the workshop I took too (3/n)

🧵 I bought some washed Romney (staple length ~4 in) from my friend Amanda in Fall 23’. This fleece won first place in the white long wool category in Spring 23’ at the MA Sheep and Woolcraft festival! (L: washed, R: lock popped) (2/n)

🧵 Guess what, I finally received my drum carder last weekend! I had waited 6 months for it so I was ecstatic when it arrived. As my first project, I tried carding Romney with sari silk. Please follow along on my carding journey if you’re interested! (1/n)
