Faroese artist Díðrikur á Skarvanesi died in obscurity, but his illustration of Faroese breeding birds (approx 1830s) is truly unique.

Can I share this curious bit of Faroese art factoid. The first Faroese artist Díðrikur á Skarvanesi died in obscurity, but his illustration of Faroese breeding birds (approx 1830s) is truly unique and (mayb biased) but I think this great skua is particularly beautiful 🌍🧪

Undefeated. Champions for the 22nd time. 🏆💙
What a season it’s been — and tonight, we celebrate it together in Klaksvík!
But we’re not done yet… The Cup final is coming up on Friday, and we hope to see all of you there backing the boys one last time this year!

Yeah, the Faroes are still part of the kingdom of Denmark, so there’s a lot more Danish influence there than in Iceland.
If you go back a thousand years, Swedish and Icelandic were the same language, so there are many similarities. But Faroese and Icelandic are a lot closer.

The selkie is a creature from Irish, Faroese and Scottish folklore who has the appearance of a seal in water, but sheds its skin to come ashore and reveal a human form. If a human finds the skin and hides it, the selkie cannot return to sea. 🦭

Icelandic is cool. Faroese is also close, but it has a much bigger phonetic change - and holy shit was it big, the Faroe Islands has free courses. But some of the innovations of Icelandic are hidden by a very conservative orthography and enthusiasm.
West Norwegian is also West Norse.

Had an interesting conversation with a Faroese person last night who said his position is that he’d like the Faroes to be independent eventually, but only when the country is ready to handle the costs of it. I found it fascinating because that position basically does not exist in Scottish politics 🤔
> I'm also a least worst case unionist (in the Scottish independence sense) in that I think independence would make many people much worse off for a long time, like Brexit has done, but that too means uncomfortable adjacency to flag shaggers, empire apologists and, well, that whole Brexit lot. >
