Last week, many fond readers of Oliver Sacks were rocked by the discovery that he had fabricated details of his famous case studies. In popular books like Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat, the avuncular neurologist, who died a decade ago, seemed to enter into the minds of patients suffering from bizarre neurological and psychiatric conditions, replacing the impersonality of medical language with empathy and warmth. Behind the scenes, though, according to The New Yorker, Sacks was apparently racked with guilt. In his private journal, he confessed he had given patients “powers (starting with powers of speech) which they do not have”. Though Sacks didn’t go into what he called his “pure fabrications”, The New Yorker points to several likely examples. The most egregious one appears in Hat, where he described autistic twin brothers who could spontaneously generate enormous prime numbers. Sacks said he recognised the numbers as such by cross-referencing them with a childhood book at home. In fact, no such ability ever appeared to other researchers studying the twins, and there was probably no such book either. Intrigued, I went back and read Hat again. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Still, it was shocking to me how flagrantly the author’s unreliability now emerged on the page. The stories he tells seemed much too neat: almost as if he had decided on a particular philosophical or moral lesson to pass on to the reader, then built an instructive patient around a germ of truth. Might have been mentioned at some point, and the fatigue fog is simply blocking it from my memory, but is Morian particularly picky about her cigarettes? Would she gravitate heavily to a specific brand, or does she not care as long as it's a smoke? It's not mentioned, because she's the only one who smokes. But she does smoke a specific brand, and she's got it set as a preset on the fabricator so she can make more whenever. It's not an expensive or like, premium brand. It's just a specific one. Because she's sentimental and predictable like that.
