A one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel modernist Winged Creature brooch by Hank & Diny Frugte of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Entirely handmade hand wrought copper enamel wearable art brooch! With one end up, the design is a stylized butterfly, but the other end up it looks more like some fantastical creature. Can be worn either way. Entirely handmade hand-cut from thick copper sheet, then hammered from the back, and incised in sections at front, and then a gorgeous transparent orange enamel is fired overtop. The transparent enamel makes it possible to see all the hand work done to the metal prior to the enameling. At very top is a black enamel outline of the fantastical winged creature/butterfly. At back the brooch is counter enameled in a speckled dark blue enamel. Hank Frugte (d. 1990) and his wife Diny (1929-2024) were originally from the Netherlands, but emigrated to Canada just after WWII and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. They were already trained enamelists and artists who brought their talents and experience with them to Edmonton, and created amazing artworks throughout their careers! They also shared their knowledge and experience with other artists by teaching workshops and other educational endeavors in both Canada and the US. The brooch measures 2-3/8" tall by 2-1/8" widest point. Marked at back of the brooch as shown, "Hank / Diny Frugte Edmonton". Excellent vintage condition.

There were some makeups that were thick, like the stuff that would melt in the 1700's. There was also "enameling" which was done in the Victorian era, they even painted on blue veins. MADAME X by Sargeant was considered obscene partly because of the obvious use of enameling.

This isn't new to me phenomenon, and has shown up unpredictably for years on and off.

Sometimes, trying to sort out how to do a thing in software is impossible. Or someone giving me instructions on tarping tent.

Other times, I taught myself torch enameling from a book & drop spindle from YouTube 🤷‍♂️

MY BATHROOM TILES ARE PAINTED. It seems to be a Thing that people did in the early 80s in certain neighborhoods (we have at least one neighbor with the same color terrible paint).

For the love of everything good and holy do NOT paint your tiles unless you are enameling them. YOU CAN'T CLEAN THEM.

As a ceramic and glass artist - yes. You don't need water to sinter silicates, it's just a very convenient medium for making shapes in clay. We do this all the time in cloisonné enameling. Hard part is that's usually very thin - thick bricks might have a long dwell time required.

These brooches functioned as garment clasps (much like the generally larger fibulae) and are distinctive for their decorative enamels. The art of enameling was highly popular among the conquered peoples who lived on the outskirts of the Roman empire, chiefly the Celts and the Gauls. Though the enameling technique was practiced by the Romans themselves on small objects, the brightly colored decoration readily appealed to "barbarian" taste. By the AD 200s, enameled brooches like these were being made in abundance by the native peoples of Britain and Gaul (modern France and Belgium).

These plaques were probably originally placed at the end of the arms of a processional cross. They are decorated in an enameling technique called basse-taille in which colorful translucent enamel pastes are fused over an engraved and chased silver plaque.

Thank you! Enameling can be very instant gratification compared to other kiln firing processes. Each color or layer would have taken 1.5-2 minutes in the kiln. Depending on the amount of pieces and colors, it could still take some time to fire everything but not hours per firing like ceramics.

A superb vintage 1990s one of a kind handmade enamel on copper and steel original abstract artwork/wall sculpture titled "Cloud Cover" by American artist/enamelist Pam Steele. An exceptional artwork by this internationally recognized American artist/enamelist! Here is a short description of her work from her website:

"Pam Steele is internationally known for her large-scale metal and enameled glass wall pieces, which have been exhibited in numerous galleries (NYC, Atlanta, Boston), and commissioned for many private and public collections, including: I.B.M., Xerox, Lucent Technology, and Hyatt Hotels. Her experimental techniques in enameling glass to copper at 1500 degrees, combined with unique metal patinas on copper and steel make her work both painterly and sculptural. All of her pieces emit a strong architectural presence combined with an elegant spiritual quality."

This artwork is a smaller format than her corporate installations, and will fit on most any wall in the home. Measures 12.25" by 8" by 1" thick at outside edges of the frame. Signed with description and title "Cloud Cover" at back as shown in the photos. Overall excellent vintage condition with some wear and spotting to the matte but no damage of loss to the enamel or the artwork itself.

Interesting. I'm assuming the fumes are from the glass, or would it be the fuel burning off?

I was looking at small metalwork and enameling w/ a torch; your torch looks very precise for your detail work, but obviously hot enough to melt glass.

The word enamel derives from the Old French "esmail" and the Old High German "smelzen", meaning "to smelt". This is the most crucial process in the making of enamel. To prepare enamel, the constituents of glass (flint, or sand, as well as red lead, and soda or potash) are heated together to form a clear flux. To this a coloring agent (usually a metallic oxide) is added: copper for green, cobalt for blue, iron for red or brown. The enamel is then allowed to cool and solidify in slabs. Before use, each color is separately ground into a fine powder, placed on a prepared metal surface, and fired in a kiln. When cool, the surface is polished to remove any imperfections and add brilliance to the colors. The difference between the various enameling techniques lies chiefly in the methods used to prepare the metal surface for the enamel.

A whimsical vintage 1980s handmade copper enamel figurative Windy Women design artwork by Lilyanne Huguet-David of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Super colorful entirely handmade whimsical design copper enamel artwork by one of the greats of enamel art in Quebec in the second half of the 20th century! Depicts two women all bundled up for the cold and wind of a storm, and one of them has lost her beret in the wind! Huguet-David (b. 1935) was a French-born Jew whose family escaped France just prior to the Nazi invasion, and lived in Quebec for most of her life. She studied enameling in Montreal in the 1970s, and exhibited widely throughout her career in Europe, North America, and Israel. This charming artwork measures 11" diameter by about 3/4" high at rim. Marked at back as shown, "Lilyanne H. David Creation Exclusive N: 0162-3". "Creation Exclusive" denotes that this artwork is a one of a kind. Excellent vintage condition.
