Happy midwinter solstice, you filthy hippies. 😎 Gloomstalkers, the light is rising!

(Had a plan to pop up to Dartmoor for the sunset, but the rows and menhir are in literally Drizzlecombe)

One December day a few years back - part of the Drizzlecombe ceremonial site on #Dartmoor

On the far hill is Whittenknowle Rocks - a Bronze Age settlement with very pronounced walls

A selection of standing stones at the magnificent Drizzlecombe stone row on Dartmoor, from the tallest menhir standing over 4 metres tall to the smallest that barely pokes through the grass.

The Giant’s Basin cairn burial mound at Drizzlecombe #Dartmoor

An important person was laid there. But there are quite a few others on the slope

Drizzlecombe

The first menhir at the foot of the hill is massive & from one side, almost pyramidical - from the other, as slender as a wand

I walked from the scout hut at Gutter Tor, to Ditsworthy House, the Bronze Age settlement at Whittenknowles Rocks, the Drizzlecombe ceremonial Neolithic/Bronze Age site, the Harter Tors & over to Eylesbarrow

May not be much for serious allday hikers (I was one!). But enough! #Dartmoor

I took a walk from Gutter Tor, along Drizzlecombe stone rows, and up the Plym to Plym steps, coming back via Lower and Higher Hartor Tors and Eyelsbarrow mine. 5.5 miles in lush sunshine!

From Hartor Tor, the menhir almost looks like it has horns (in fact, it’s a beak-like protrusion as seen in the second image)

A 5ft long propped stone, overlooking the stone rows, menhirs, and enclosures of the Drizzlecombe complex. Was this erratic stone set up by people as part of the Drizzlecombe complex of megalithic stone structures? #StandingStoneSunday More...

Since moving down Plymouth, Drizzlecombe has become my go-to place on this side of the moor for a spot of ancient stone bothering. So many stones, so few people. Just how I like it.
