Facts.

I dare say more should know about #DrDamianMilton’s #DoubleEmpathy problem especially those working in #education
@kieranrose.bsky.social explains it well

Further Turing-style test:

Are we even remotely getting near to mainstream T&L being able to bridge (or appear to bridge) the #doubleempathy gap between (often) neurotypical teacher and #neurodivergent learner?

Evidence suggests - no.

Learn from #autistic and other #neurodivergent authored theory & research re #neurodiversity, #monotropism and #doubleempathy.

Use this understanding to make teaching & learning accessible for all students - everyone benefits from ND-affirming approaches 😊

Disappointing not to see any references to #autistic & other #neurodivergent authored theory & #EdRes in this discussion.

If teachers can’t conceptualise #neurodiversity, #doubleempathy & #monotropism, the ‘ignore, masking, #burnout’ cycle identified by @suereviews.bsky.social will continue 😔
What support do teachers really need when it comes to SEND?

Inspired by Teacher Tapp's findings we explore what kind of support is needed and practical ways forward.

If I stated my case to these people I'd come across as needy and over emotional. All of these people are NTs. They can't imagine their way into my brain and I can only partially imagine my way into theirs. This is where #doubleempathy comes into play, a theory about NT/ND communication errors.

'I wear my heart on my sleeve'; so often emotions are "embodied". To only accept & expect emotions to be shared through words, limits the realms of emotional languaging for all. Being curious, leaning into space to connect, helps everyone to language, reduces the #DoubleEmpathy gap

I really hope the DfE is minded to learn from #autistic & other #neurodivergent authored theory & #EdRes.

It's Autism Day/Month, and I keep telling people they need to learn from autistic people... But what do they most need to know?

It's funny, none of the key autistic theories about autism are just about autism: #Neurodiversity, #Monotropism, #DoubleEmpathy.

And also to provide #neuro-affirming training on #neurodiversity, in the light of current lack of inclusivity re ND children & teens, leading to school distress, burnout etc.

Lots to learn from ND authored theory & #EdRes.

Why do so many teams struggle to collaborate across neurotypes?
In my Stanford Neurodiversity Summit poster, I outline 3 practices that make research (and workplaces) more neuroinclusive. Check it out at AutisticCulture.substack.com

#DoubleEmpathy problem
( Dr Damian Milton )

If everyone in society understood this concept, it would be a momentous change , a shift in society’s perception.

I absolutely love speaking about it.

It just so happens there’s a video with #Aucademy

V interesting!

“The assumption that students will naturally attend to the most relevant features is one of the most persistent errors in instruction”

Why is a focus on focus relevant to relevance, and what might this mean for teachers of interest-based learners?

Oh don’t get me wrong , I ADORE presenting , doing workshops , educating mostly non autistic people about the #Autistic Experience ..

So I would say that we mask when dealing with Non Neurodivergent people .

Which ties into the #DoubleEmpathy problem (my lecturer & friend Damian Milton )

As long as I'm posting about my upcoming book chapters on neurodiversity and education, I might as well reshare my page of resources all about the two (focusing on secondary school education, because that's where I have the most experience).

Agree - mini whiteboards super useful. My q is: how has your practice developed in the light of new #autistic & #neurodivergent theory & #EdRes, eg #neurodiversity, #doubleempathy & #monotropism, and do you have any tips for others re better #inclusion of ND CYP?

in other news, I had to very briefly explain to a younger NHS professional about the existence of the #doubleempathy factor

I casually wonder if more NHS professionals know about it or #pots, at this point in time
