🚨 The public inquiry on Manston is shocking, yet unsurprising.

The detention centre was found to be:

❌ “Overcrowded, squalid and insanitary” which led to
❌ an outbreak of diphtheria and scabies
❌ and inhumane conditions.

There are important exceptions where boosters are recommended because we know protection wanes or exposure risk changes:
Tetanus/diphtheria (Td or Tdap): booster every 10 years
Pertussis: one adult Tdap booster (and during each pregnancy)
MMR: booster if you’re unsure of immunity

I’ve never seen measles, diphtheria, or N. meningitidis meningitis.

Today’s doctors will. 💔

I have seen it once only, a long time ago, in a baby with tetanus. It is not something to forget.
The reason I never saw it again is vaccination.
Sadly perhaps doctors and nurses of the future will again see opisthotonus as well as measles, whooping cough, diphtheria and other dreaded diseases?

Right idea but I was off by 2 states.

A century ago, diphtheria was everywhere, killing thousands of children each year. Today, it’s a disease that’s preventable with vaccines.

A recent outbreak in Nigeria that left hundreds sick is a grim warning of the dangers of letting vaccinations lapse.

Jan. 12, 1926: The discovery of the first active vaccine for tetanus is announced by France's Pasteur Institute. The breakthrough by Christian Zoeller and Gaston Ramon builds upon earlier work to prevent diphtheria. A tetanus toxin is weakened with formalin to create the vaccine.

salts before age 2 was not significantly related to any of 50 chronic disorders, including 36 autoimmune, 9 allergic, and 5 neurodevelopmental conditions. The lack of dose-dependent relationship between aluminum salts and a child's ongoing health strongly suggests the ingredient is safe for use.

Enjoyed reading this 1895 debunking of criticisms of diphtheria antitoxin jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...
Of course, it would be nice if we still had reliable DAT access to meet needs, even better if we had an upgrade (mAbs!) over an 1890s serum, and best if we no longer had #diphtheria at all (💉!)

Nazi Germany (1933-1945): Science was replaced by pseudoscientific race theories and eugenics, tanking healthcare and leading to atrocities like forced sterilization and mass murder. Scientific research stopped; death rates for conditions like diphtheria and maternal mortality skyrocketed.

I've avoided the Tetanus shot not for any fears about it but I don't work around metal any more.
And then the doctor said it also covered diphtheria and whooping cough.
So I got the shot today.
After all these years I actually have to worry about whooping cough again!!!!

“The Tdap vaccine against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) is recommended for adults every 10 years, with vaccination among older adults often prompted by the birth of a grandchild, who cannot be fully vaccinated for months. It was associated with a one-third decline in dementia.”

Just understand that people with money who can afford good health care for their kids, even without insurance reimbursements, will not be affected by this.
