#hfxws & #BikeHfx report: most streets seem to be slushy and passable. The Devonshire bike lane & Barrington greenway seem to have had one pass, so are okay but have a skim of slush. Barrington-Upper Water bike lane (i.e., south of Nora Bernard) is bare pavement. Sure hope they salt soon!

I can’t think of many rural terms I like more than “witches’ knickers” - to describe old black bin bags caught in fences, hedgerows and trees.
Some underwear once belonging to a witch but now caught forever in the straggly foliage of a dying tree, after the tree, in its last gasp of mischief, reached out and pulled the underwear off the witch while she was in mid-flight on her way to the Devonshire Witches Conference (Good Witch Division).

Likewise the term "fig" in Cornish and Devonshire dialects referred to raisins, not figs. And so "just as plum puddings weren't made with plums, but rather raisins, the figs in figgy pudding were the result of a mistake by cookbook authors...and so figgy puddings were originally just plum puddings by a different name. " (Vanderbilt University, "Cooking from the Archive: Figgy Pudding"). What about the name "Christmas Pudding"? It wasn't until 1845 that it first came to 0,531 called Christmas Pudding in Eliza Acton's bestselling cookbook, Moden Cookery for Private Families.

I've just changed my banner here to a detail of a stunning Devonshire pietre dure table made by John Woodley in the 1840s. It was once in the late Gordon Walkden's collection (which was where I originally photographed it), it is now in the V&A Museum #decorativestone #pietredure #Devon
Devonian age Devon marbles in the pietre dure table. The include red and pink stones containing orthoceras fossils and also corals, and in the centre, a grey stone showing the fossil coral Heliolites. The black stone is Ashford Black Marble from Derbyshire.

A takeaway from my conference paper at SHOW on SAS command + culture in late 1950s/early 1960s: it takes time to explain why SAS officers' shoots at Chatsworth with Andrew Devonshire - related to the PM - matter when explaining how 22 SAS outflanked the Parachute Regiment in BA / Whitehall politics.

Text that follows: The Devonshire bike bus rides on Sebastian Arnold The Devonshire Community Public School bike bus, serving students in Centretown, is rolling into its fourth year. It shows students and families that other ways of getting to school are possible and important. It's also a healthy and eco-friendly way to get to school. Cassie Smith, the parent who started the Devonshire bike bus, says, "It's a group of people that get together and do things together as a community. And it's a great way to wake up and feel ready for the day ahead at school." The bike bus runs on Fridays, except for Professional Development days or holidays. Participants-parents and students - meet about 20 minutes before school begins. They convene at Primrose Park and cycle to Devonshire P.S. The trip takes around 15 minutes. At the beginning of this school year, about 25 people joined the ride, Smith said. Anybody can join. Even students at other schools can join as the bike bus currently uses the Ottawa bike path network. Finley Arnold, a Grade 3 Devonshire student who participates in the bike bus, says, "I like how you bike with your friends and family, and it's a fun way to get to school." Usually, Smith is waiting at Primrose Park with a reflector jacket and her eight-year-old son Freddie is pedalling around the park. When everybody arrives they get into order, the leader or "bus driver" goes in front of all the kids. The scout goes in front of the leader (to check if roads are clear), the kids go in the middle, and an adult in the back goes last (to make sure nobody gets left behind). Sometimes doughnuts or cookies are served, and there is usually music played through a speaker on someone's bike. In the spring, bike buses gained momentum in other parts of the city.
