What a meeting! #GastrulationReloaded not only discussed the blueprint of the body plan, but also provided the blueprint of what the next decade of #devbio could look like. Old 🤝 new questions. New 🤝 classical tools. In vivo 🤝 in vitro. Gastrulation Reloaded: The most amazing time of your life?
#GastrulationReloaded was a FANTASTIC , loaded with exciting discoveries. It went beyond gastrulation because what happens before & after is obviously connected. Still, not half the people who should be there were. @jeromegros.bsky.social largely funded the conference 👏. @embo.org should reconsider

Today for #FluorescenceFriday I’m sharing a 👻Halloween-themed🎃 neural crest explant “web of cells” from Julia Godinez, a 4th year @ucdavis.bsky.social graduate student in the lab. She is studying mechanisms driving conserved and divergent cranial neural crest migration and differentiation. #DevBio

Me too! And I think those working with stem cell models should read broad & delve deep into more traditional devbio. But not fond of how this is phrased

when I took DevBio this was the bare minimum answer for humans, other species you can apparently do less because nobody cares if starfish are inbred

So sad to hear of the passing of a legend. My interactions with him at meetings were always pleasant and engaging. My condolences to his family and friends. #Devbio
Very saddened to hear of John Gurdon’s passing. I’ve been lucky enough to interact with him at multiple points through my career - from undergrad lectures, through his position as former Chair of @biologists.bsky.social’s Board of Directors, and as an author at @dev-journal.bsky.social.

It’s no underestimate to say that he founded a whole field of biology - reprogramming - and his influence on the #devbio field and community has been enormous. He’ll be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on.
