We're back in court today fighting the Trump administration's relentless, unjust efforts to re-detain Mahmoud Khalil in retaliation for his advocacy for Palestinian human rights.

The government can’t punish someone just because they don’t like what they have to say.

this is a tacit admission that the administration is not confident in the legal arguments it would have to make in order to detain them, which should also cast into question the legality of the operation in the first place
Those men are super dangerous drug smuggling terrorists, which is why . . . we are letting them go.

DHS says they “don’t arrest U.S. citizens for immigration enforcement.”

But at least 170 Americans they’ve detained know that’s not true.

Don’t ignore their stories.

If Trump can detain citizens—including combat Veterans—for days without cause, no one is safe from his whims.

No one is above the law — not ICE, not CBP, and not Donald Trump.

Federal agents who assault or detain New Yorkers without legal authority must be held accountable and the NYPD must protect our neighbors if the federal government refuses to.

Yet again, masked agents have brought their mass deportation dragnet to our streets, using excessive force to indiscriminately detain and arrest non-violent individuals while stoking fear in all NYers.

My office is committed to assisting our constituents and holding this administration accountable.
Federal agents descend on Chinatown in apparent raid
The raid follows recent federal arrests at a Midtown migrant shelter, part of what officials call a broader push to “restore law and order” in New York City.

Yup.

A few months ago, I pointed out that part of the reason for ICE employees covering their faces, was that some of them were likely government contractors and not law enforcement, and so has no legal authority to detain.

People that know nothing about criminal justice reform yelled at me.🤷🏿‍♂️
The Supreme Court is about to decide whether private contractors can break the law—and get away with it.

After being sued under state human trafficking laws for forcing immigrant detainees to work for free, the nation’s largest private prison company, GEO Group, wants blanket immunity.

This is a prime example of why we all must be involved in local politics.

In 2011, ICE was given zoning permission in Portland on the condition that they could not detain anyone for more that 12 hours or overnight.

Now Portland has a secret weapon to stop them.

A judge in Chicago just flipped the script completely.

If ICE agents are caught trying to arrest someone at or around a courthouse, they can now be arrested themselves.

Cook County’s top judge made it illegal for ICE to detain anyone inside or even near a courthouse.

ICE’s own policies say the agency should not detain pregnant, postpartum or nursing individuals.

It’s doing so anyway. Immigrants’ health is suffering. Congress has abandoned a requirement that ICE make public how many such immigrants have been detained.

ICE keeps detaining pregnant immigrants — against federal policy
But the number is impossible to measure since Congress let lapse a requirement that ICE report how many pregnant, postpartum and nursing immigrants are in custody.

In brief, this is simple:

The military has no authority to detain the survivors of its latest strike for the same reasons it had no authority to target them in the first place:

No armed attack = No viable self defense claim = No targeting or detention authority
