Decentlab DL-ZN1 dendrometers record stem radius every ten minutes, revealing real-time insights into growth, water balance, and drought stress.
Sound artist Marcus Maeder transforms these signals into sound — making climate change not just visible, but audible.
NANO vom 8.

Au-Wom Wombat Forest #eddycovariance tower spring clean and check ups. No water ingress in this anemometer 😃 And no damage from the storm on Wednesday, only one tree down in the plot. The DIY Lora #dendrometers survived winter too - mostly.

Update from Sophie & SP1: In Großmutz, CO₂, N₂O & ET fluxes were measured using manual closed canopy chambers. Dendrometers & sap flow sensors were also installed. Back at @zalf.bsky.social, a prototype for the automated chamber systems to measure gas fluxes is being built. #formula #agroforestry

Hi Bob, it's tricky to manage since both point dendrometers require you to drill into the tree, it's hard to know if this will create artifacts in the growth, hence the offset. Then if we keep them in alignment but increase the spacing, it may well also result in different values! Insights welcome!
April 24, 2025 at 7:04 PM
Nice! Will be interesting to see what you find data-wise but also maintenance, etc. I’m wondering if you considered putting the point dendrometers on the same side of the tree?
April 24, 2025 at 5:30 PM
That's still super powerful data! I just saw a dataset from those type of dendrometers read every 2 weeks for 10+ years and they beautifully document tree decline before mortality (the work involved though 😱)!
April 24, 2025 at 8:55 AM
Nice! How many species are you doing this for? We've just started a trial comparing the TOMST point dendrometers and the band dendrometers on a few species here in the UK that have different types of bark. Slightly apprehensive to find out the results ...

Nice set up! Are you comparing measurements between different dendrometers?

In subproject 1, Christian Ammer & Christina Hackmann (U Göttingen) will study how beech forests with different structures respond to climatic extremes like droughts. They focus on tree growth and water balance, using in situ measurements (sap flow sensors, dendrometers) and retrospective 13C data.
