#dendrites
Words gnaw at the dendrites
they shapeshift into
everything that's repulsive

When it's one rat
I can bat it away
but they swarm

Got inspired to clean up my big sample of native copper. Wow- pretty happy with the result! Love the little dendrites.

Recent findings show that lithium dendrites can form within polymer-based electrolytes, challenging assumptions about their protective role in lithium-metal batteries and informing future material improvements. doi.org/g989pd
Preventing dangerous short circuits in lithium batteries: The surprising growth of destructive dendrites in electrolytes
Lithium-metal batteries are among the most promising technologies for energy storage. They offer significantly more energy in less space—and at a lower weight.

Dendrites can cause short circuits in #lithiumbatteries. Researchers, including Fabian Apfelbeck, found such structures may also form inside polymer-based #electrolytes, not only at electrodes. This finding could improve solid-state #batteries: go.tum.de/518497

Currently performing SEM on zinc anodes 🔬. It looks pretty, but one of the major issues with rechargeable zinc #batteries apart from hydrogen evolution is the formation of dendrites, which lead to capacity loss and ultimately short circuit the cell🪫.

Dendrites, acrylic on canvas

I wanted to imagine all the tiny dendrites trying to reach each other and finding light when they do. But the negative space is really making me think about follicles and a little ovum nestled in there... maybe I'll work on a follow-up piece?

(3) We then show that female AOTU neurons are similar to their male counterparts, in terms of their LC10a connections and visual receptive field properties. These results argue that the core visual pursuit circuit has similar physiological properties in both sexes.

Remember dendrites (from the Greek word dendron meaning tree)? They are tree-like minerals that form under special conditions. There is a lovely dendritic #copper sample on the upper right. Thanks Susie! More in comment 👇🏼

Michigan has historically been a source for beautiful, and useful, #copper. Specifically, the Upper Peninsula contains the largest native copper deposits!

The crystallization pattern from orbit looked like neural dendrites.
Beautiful symmetry humans can't see from ground level.

` This expanded CO2-sensing surface arises from its unique architecture, consisting of numerous flattened dendritic sheets folded into intricate lamellae. In contrast, cpB and cpC dendrites exhibit sparse, narrow cylindrical branches.`

It will "optimize battery life" why? Because it is "safer for the battery" to not charge it to 100. Heat and dendrites are the enemies and both are worse with higher charges

I expect we’ll see continued success of hybridized/engineered architectures as we understand more about WHY embedding spaces seem powerful

Ironically ppl were predicting this 10+ years ago because the brain has many different types of specialized neurons/structures, it’s not just piles of dendrites
First major mamba based network I think I’ve seen

Between this and diffusion LLMs, we’re starting to see the evolution beyond transformer-attention based networks— very exciting

What did we find? Homing pigeons have smaller hippocampal neurons than feral pigeons. We think this might be associated with higher packing density of neurons, which could confer some advantages in spatial cognition. But more testing needed!

Feral and homing pigeons differ greatly in hippocampal neuron density, so we asked, are there are also differences in neuron size and morphology. We used high resolution slide scanning of Golgi stained sections and digitally reconstructed neurons from both breeds.

YEAH. when the powerlines around the globes are severed and you can't even get gasoline at a station because a world wide disaster like forest fires from coast to coast will not even let solar panels recharge batts that explode when left at 0 dendrites and roads are not passable. can't fly either.
