The Quicksand Elemental is a sentient form of mud and swamp goo. As it rises from the surface of the muddy swamp water, multiple human skeletons are revealed to be embedded in its form and a new victim drowns in the foreground, just a hand is rising out of the water. Thank you! That one and actually all of those are from an Art challenge list called Creatuanary and the prompt was Dryad of the Oak. I happened to be substitute teaching in an Art classroom, killing time with a sketchbook, thinking about the prompt when I saw a poster of the Vermeer.

Huli jing and Kitsune are 17 and 18 on the Creatuanary 2025 list and they are, respectively, the Chinese and Japanese names for what is essentially the same creature of myth: the multi-tailed Fox spirit.

Here is Huli jing, sporting nine tails, the maximal number.

So I’m emancipating myself and my creature creations from any chronological or temporal strictures or sub-divisions.

Creatuanary shall be perpetual. I’ll keep working on the 2025 list and revisiting creatures from previous years.

I wondered if that concept, which I never would have touched with a ten foot pole if not for an urge to complete the Creatuanary list, deserved a better execution. I made this.
