There's SO much going on in the first seconds of Scud: The Disposable Assassin on Sega Saturn. Even the splash screens are extra. And then we go straight into 1997 cutscenes. It just keeps going like that the entire time! We haven't even started playing yet and I'm already overstimulated.

The most unnecessary TV of all time?

Built-in consoles in a TV, like the Divers 2000 Dreamcast, are hot commodities. Well, how about a CD-i?

The BeoCenter AV5 is a chunky 69kg and comes with expanding speakers. Stylish as hell, but as a boutique item, you'll pay a pretty penny.

Don't call it a swastika. Manji: PSY Yūki on PC-98 is a super standard 16-bit era 1995 role-playing game, but it does have a neat art style. Seemingly the only commercial work of developer PSD, but composer Yūzō Koshiro has a lengthy career, working on Streets of Rage and the new Shinobi

Gameplay from the 1980 arcade game, New York! New York! One of the earliest appearances of the city. What makes it New York? Well, you're looking at it. It does have some good, ear-scratching sound effects 🔊

Sigma is actually a Japanese developer, only in operation until 1992.

Guardians of the 'Hood, apostrophe. Arcade game from the super specific 1992 era where Atari was obsessed with digitized graphics violence. Instead of Pit Fighter, this is a Final Fight-esque beat 'em up. You're gymbros that punch through the city and convert bad guys with muscle power 💪

Trailer for Shadow of Memories, a pretty early Konami PlayStation 2 game, in 2001, with voice acting that reflects the era. Hell, the entire atmosphere is borderline Deadly Premonition-esque, as it's a time travel detective game, but you're the murder victim? Underexposed, eccentric game

Trailer for the 2002 PlayStation 2 game, Godai: Elemental Force. A cool-looking, but seriously underbaked attempt at a spectacle fighter, hard to control. Pretty much the MO for The 3DO Company, who would churn out more of these kinds of cheap games.

It has a metacritic of 27. Yikes.

Not technically a game, but a legally distinct Super Nintendo appearing in the hentai anime, Utsukushiki Sei no Dendōshi Reirei, along with totally not Xevious.

Although, the characters do get transported inside the game world. That's an isekai? Anyway, tentacle porn ensues 🤷

A six-sided summoning circle and a pentagram are not the same, as seen on the box of Tinkle: Zenimusume for PC-98.

A lot of sharp art in this 1993 dungeon crawler meets quiz game. Despite featuring full nudity, it also stays pretty tasteful in undressing sexy monsters.

Puyo Puyo if it was a good game.

Magical Block Carat on PC-98 in 1992 with multi-screen, scrolling nudity. Pretty great art. An additional fun quirk to this one is that you select the direction of the blocks you want to clear. You can even choose to do it diagonally.

Here's a slightly newer one. Opening of AV King, a 2006 PC game by prolific studio Elf. It's an elaborate tycoon game around, you guessed it, building an adult video empire with your girlfriend. You gradually unlock more scenarios, filthy acts and so on, with tons of material.

Mahjong Sports Line, a 1996 PC-98 game whose sharp, double-screen art might look familiar, as it's the same stellar pedigree as Sogna of Animahjong fame, under a short-lived alias. You attempt to win back a budget for the mahjong club from six class presidents of other factions

Yanyan no Gekitō Dōsōkai on PC-98 in 1995 does card battle in The Queen of Tenshidō '95, a spoof on SNK's King of Fighters. Developer Tenshidō uses a cast of prior mascots in its own version of Uno. Winner decided who gets naked, with a cleaning system à la Powerwash Simulator.

Gameplay for Yellow Brick Road, here on Sega Saturn. Originally a 1995 PC game, presented as a role-playing game in a story book. It's short, basic, ugly and it was not well received. Big kusoge vibes, though this got an overseas release too. It might be trash, but I think it oozes charm

Late title card for G.O.D. Pure, the most Earthbound-looking game on Playstation in 1997, which makes sense as it's a remake of a 1996 SNES game, after Nintendo 64 was out. By Imagineer of Quest 64 fame.

Aliens have invaded and you go to the distant year of 2009 to fix that.

Intro gameplay of Kattobi! Takuhai-kun on PC Engine, a proto-GTA 1990 wacky bike delivery game. From Advance Communication Company, who brought you such hits as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Circus Caper and Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus on NES.

The quality is similar to those. Fun!

Japanese TV commercial for Pachio-kun: Warau Uchū on PC Engine CD-ROM. From a long-standing series of pachinko games, your sentient pachinko ball gets in a spaceship to save Pachinko Planet...by playing pachinko in a cool way.

That's probably the games they're talking about. Right?? 🤔

More from very specific dedicated peripherals, here's a Japanese magazine advertisement promoting the Rhytmpad for the first Paca Paca Passion. And it's only €25 extra. That would be unheard of today. It's like DDR but for your hands. The buttons are technically just PlayStation buttons.

I don't wanna keep doing spooky stuff all month, so here's one last one: the Nokia N-Gage really only had one scary game and it's Ashen.

A shooter akin to your Quake and whatnot, but on your phone in 2004. It even had multiplayer. Developer for hire, Torus Games, still exists!

Imagining telling kids to teach themselves to play older games, like the 1985 SSI joint, Battle of Antietam.

What do you do in it? How does it work? Nobody knows. Good luck!

(You recreate the Civil War battle, played over one hour a turn for 11 hours, in line with the actual event)
