Chanoyu instructor Alastor is too good... seriously... he definitely thinks matcha lattes are an insult to tea leaves so they can go straight to hell...

LOLLL but seriously it's so good! And your history with Japan and chanoyu sounds amazing 🥹👏
📻 You’re not allowed to eat the wagashi until I say so
🍎 But I'm starving!
📻 And you must not sit cross-legged!
🍎 My legs went numb, it can't be helped! Besides, how do you even do seiza?

Yes!!! I have a ryokan AU headcanon where he’s an uptight chanoyu instructor who gets brought in to the traditional ryokan to “culture” Charlie’s young team and her clueless father about the old ways 🤭

(The Conversation) — Social media has turned traditional Japanese matcha into a commercial trend, though its roots lie in Zen Buddhism. A scholar of premodern Japanese literature unpacks that history.

Christmas chanoyu with delicious matcha from my cousin’s tea shop in Oslo, Norway. “Gamle Ørn” translates to “old eagle” and has layered meaning in Norwegian culture. Sweets were chestnut chakin shibori and roasted persimmon. Merry Christmas! #chanoyu #teaceremony #matcha

Chanoyu actually just means “water for tea”.

Chado (茶道) is more “the way of tea”.

Great ads, which I remember well from the time they came out.

Is it wrong that my first thought was to turn common phrases said in chadou/chanoyu into innuendos? 「おしまい下さい」

This is the first time I’ve seen a chatsubo in the USA that wasn’t hundreds of dollars, and the first time ever in a store. Usually it’s on eBay. After participating in several kuchikiri demonstrations over the last month I felt I needed it for next year.

My Chanoyu collection grows!

I experienced my first chanoyu tea ceremony (茶の湯) yesterday, hosted by Chaboshu, the men's tea ceremony school in Seattle. Beautiful!

Tea lessons in an ancient mountain forest above the Tucson desert was a stroke of fortune in this week of chaos. How healing to have tea beneath pines that have lived far longer than our country has even existed. Our sweets plate was a piece of bark shed from a centuries-old tree. #chanoyu #tea

Hopefully, the Chinese and Korean tea farmers catch up. There is absolutely no need to use chanoyu-quality matcha for an iced latte. Some green powder with some flavor of matcha absolutely will suffice for that.

The price of matcha has skyrocketed because production has not been able to keep up with the surge in overseas demand. Matcha is becoming unaffordable for the Japanese people. This is not good for the sustainability of chanoyu culture. theconversation.com/green-gruel-...
Green gruel? Pea soup? What Westerners thought of matcha when they tried it for the first time
‘Matcha mania’ shows no signs of slowing, with global demand pushing supply chains to the brink. It’s marked quite the rise for a drink long met with skepticism in the West.

Chabako in Seattle by Seward Park’s giant torii gate with my friends Ophi and Tali. What a beautiful day! I had also planned a memorial tea at a former Japanese internment camp in Canada but had a fairly serious injury. (Thankfully I’m healing up and won’t need surgery.) #teaceremony #chanoyu #tea

Due to inbound travelers and rising international demand, the price of matcha (powder tea) has skyrocketed in Japan. At the store where I usually buy matcha, the price has tripled in three months. This is a serious matter for the resilience of chanoyu culture?
