#vss365 Pho Bear didn’t understand his English cousin’s love of honey. He obviously hadn’t tasted the sweetness of bamboo. As an #experiment, Pho sent his cousin a bamboo shoot on which he’d written "HONEY" and attached furry catkins dyed black and yellow to fool his cousin into eating it.

Hazelnuts! Corylus americana. Nuts on the left, catkins (the staminate inflorescence) on the right. Those will bloom in the spring. They're monoecious but the pistillate flowers are small.

John Bannister wrote that native people here did not like to eat them, prefering chestnuts, hickory, acorns.

Two brown hazelnuts with leafy bracts around the nuts. Doubly serrate leaves changing to yellow.

An autumnal moth known as The Sallow, Cirrhia icteritia. So-called because the larvae feed on the catkins of sallow trees. The adults are around September to October camouflaged against the yellows and browns of the autumn leaves.

On a snowy day in the Eastern Jin (317–420), statesman Xie An gathered his family for poetry and talk. Watching the flakes drift, he asked what they resembled. His nephew likened them to salt in the air, but his niece, the gifted poet Xie Daoyun, replied, “like willow catkins in the wind.” 1/2
