The CRPG genre really began to find popular footing with games like Wizardry and Ultima, but later titles like Wasteland, Pool of Radiance, Might and Magic and The Bard's Tale cemented the genre.
But don't miss out on other RPGs like Phantasie, AutoDuel, Don't Go Alone, Dragon Wars and Starflight!

Mostly I really wanted to experience the story but struggled with the form factor — this sort of CRPG feels like it really wants keyboard and mouse, but I have to use a controller, and it just didn’t “feel right”. And so far the phone version is “real” enough I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

I don't like JRPGs. You can't create your character. You can't control your character's progression. And you can't make any meaningful decisions. Morrowind was the blueprint for how a CRPG should work.

My favorite Weird Brain thing is that I have a specific kind of dark-toned brain patter that triggers when I'm getting up in the middle of the night to pee, and it's themed in such a way that I usually end up consciously thinking about CRPG design ideas.

Started Darkness Over Daggerford the other day and it takes a lot of inspiration in quest and world design from Baldur's Gate 1 which I really really appreciate, the world map addition on top of the abundance of quests in each area make me feel like I'm really in a CRPG this time

Okay, so it isn't an immersive sim (regretfully).
Is it a CRPG?
There's barely any quest branching, there's barely any worldbuilding and you can't dive into the setting.
So, not really.
I could have played New Vegas...
Or Thief. Or Baldur's Gate. Or...

We know almost nothing about the project overall other than that it's a CRPG (which tracks).
But importantly: every party member is romanceable. They are both party members.

I scraped the CRPG barrel (finished Tyranny), now moving on to eating the barrel itself (installing Rogue Trader again)

most fantasy influenced by ttrpg in Japan is likely to have at least a little Sword World in it (unless they're contrarian/niche enjoyers). if it's influenced directly by crpg it's likely to pull from wizardry which is a few trims and cuts away from d&d.

An excellent crpg, plenty of mean ladies, if you liked Baldurs Gate 3 I can’t imagine you wouldn’t like this

I may need to find the DMs and ears of those more wizened than mine on the historical progression of certain mechanics in RPGs to both expand on stuff I wanna yell about 7th dragon and to help cover my lack of knowledge for certain crpg progression and TTRPG knowledge

map editor now shows tile variants (corner/side pieces, etc) & loads/unloads chunks dynamically around the cursor. Still very barebones (no undo!), but I could probably build most of a game in this

World of Darkness as a whole is owned by Paradox, who are more IP hoarders than they are Devs at this point. The Chinese Room were, of course, a bad choice to develop a CRPG, but I don't expect Paradox to make good decisions.

Bloodlines, at its best, succeeds by adopting immersive sim-like interactive qualities intersectional with traditional CRPG role-playing design beats, immersing the player in an interactive world driven by their agency, where their presence is anchored and deliberate. You are there, you are acting.

I know there's a lot of demos out there to play right now but two I'd definitely recommend are the @owlcatgames.bsky.social published CRPG #ShadowOfTheRoad for a promising feudal Japan turn-based experience.
And @ofashandsteel.bsky.social for that crunchy old school RPG feel

I will be fine. And a number of other experienced rpg folks are going to be totally fine. But think of the wasted knowledge of people who know how to make complicated crpg immersive sim type things that have nowhere to go and how in 5 years ppl will look around for those folks and see no one

Back when VtMB2 was announced and some planned features revealed, I did have a thought that VtR would fir better.
To start, Blood Potency is more friendly to CRPG trappings than Generation (tho character growth done entirely through diablerie would also rule: to fight the Man you must eat the Man).
