As good digital humanists, we sometimes do extremely low-tech things! During our Byzantine sigillography seminar, one of our students is freehand drawing the missing parts of a seal.

The apse mosaic at S. Apollinare Nuovo in Classe / Ravenna is one of my all time faves. A rendering of a paradisical landscape that is rooted in realistic natural features, colours and textures. All the Ravenna mosaics are great, but this never fails to blow my mind. #byzantinebluesky #mosaics #art

The Japanese manga "Anna Komnena," which depicts the life of Anna Komnena, has finally been completed. It is grateful that I can now read the specialist books and manga that describe her life in Japanese, as well as the books written by her and her husband.

Very excited to share our latest episode with Dr. Nikita on #bioarchaeology & human mobility in Byzantine Cyprus! Dr. Nikita explains how skeletal remains can be used to study population movement, and why this helps us understand the #ByzantineBluesky world.

2day’s reading stack.. Can’t believe how much amazing material is in #papyri that I normally would never read! So much about women, trade, animals, etc., but also quite amusing in many places. Hardly the dull documentary sources I’d been lead to believe they were!

3rd #bestof2024: 4th/5thc clay fish lamp. In the synthesis of Christian themes & close attention to lifelike natural characteristics, I can see clear artistic parallels to the naturalistic literary imagery of Basil the Great’s Hexameron.📍Byzantine Museum, Athens. #byzantinebluesky #ancientbluesky

#OTD in 532 AD, the Nika Riots, a protest against emperor Justinian's unpopular ministers and then a full-fledged rebellion, came to its bloody end, resulting in the death of 30,000 rioters.

With stability restored, Justinian could now focus on the reconquest of the West.

Great talk tonight at the #Oxford #LateAntique and #Byzantine seminar by my (brilliant) undergrad tutor & MPhil supervisor Phil Booth about John of Ephesus. Considering him as a member of a marginalised group of bishops operating “on the edge” in the 6th/7th c. So fascinating. #byzantinebluesky
