A "dislike" button is NOT going to reduce toxicity. Far from it. It's going to encourage brigading.

I've effectively bullied Berger off this website thanks to y'all brigading his mentions but you should still block him (because he sucks)

(I ran afoul of him back on Twitter when Mr Trans Ally joined in a brigading of me over a purposefully bad-faith reading of a tweet of mine and kept throwing his followers at me even as I was begging people to stop because I was suicidal, so he can drink Drano and rot in piss.)

Reddit is notorious for bad faith right wing brigading, and the dislike feature allows them to bury comments and posts that they don't want to be seen.
I'd rather deal with countless annoying quote skeets and replies than not having my post go unseen because certain people hate it.

Yeah definitely not looking forward to doomers brigading and abusing the feature. I much rather them add reddit's comment and post editing.

they're adding *downvotes*?
they ~want to reduce toxicity~ and ~keep conversations closer to your circle~ and now somebody's adding fucking vote brigading?
what's next, an "autoban anyone who gets mass voted as suicidal" feature?

Who is this change purporting to make conversations better for? Because as a queer woman in tech I see angry tech bros brigading our kinds of threads often, and now they get to dislike our content to oblivion, which seems like the intended outcome as opposed to a side effect.

There's one reason to keep dragging this shit out, and it's a pressure campaign against people you and your Discourse Allies don't like. This is no better, or more intellectually valuable, than Tumblr fandom brigading.

+ why does engagement have to be so negative? social media is toxic enough, some ppl (me lol /j) alrd get upset over the feeling of being "ignored" but sure let's dogpile on them & make them feel DISLIKED

Someone let me know it was happening to me. Pretty sure they’re doing it to accounts they consider controversial or combative but don’t qualify as ”rude” (after all the flak they got for caving to brigading). Which is hilarious because imagine being told you’re too argumentative for a nerd.

Brigading here on Bluesky getting entire accounts labeled as “rude” for valid political posts. This will make this platform die. It’s already on its last legs.
Brigaders mass reported my account and Bluesky labeled it.
Spread the word and let people know how to turn it off.

Centralized platforms still have this problem, albeit not in this exact mode. No sufficiently large site will do enforcement on the basis of off-site actions except in a handful of very specific cases (the big one being brigading) because of the complications there.

The actual number of people here is very small - maybe a few tens of thousands, scattered across the globe, a lot of them complete miserable failures with no social connections or financial resources. They're warping our discourse through the power of internet brigading, that's it.

Accounts doing the brigading should be the ones tossed off the platform @safety.bsky.app. If they’re improperly brigading accounts, what is your plan to go something about it because this platform isn’t gonna survive this.

You said "thought". I don't think the AI investment bubble has much to do with thought at all. (Speculatively, though: they may be weighting reddit posts by upvotes on the input side to LLM training. Which assumes brigading and trolling don't exist on reddit …)

And then spent years on and off brigading against sex positivity on SL in general and getting kicked from sims over and over again for being a creep on the DL and a fake puritan on main. Clown 🤡

long time pillars of the leftist movement were going "I mean yeah but we really need his passion...", tons of others simply employed internet fascist harassment tactics, extremely sexist trolling and doxxing and brigading, and at that moment I knew for most people, politics is fantasy football

Reddit (the company) didn't lock it down, the moderators of r/Ireland did, as they have done in the past several times because it's a frequent target for brigading, particularly overnight when the moderators and most of the country is asleep.

The second was inspired by @knowtheory.net. We can now watch for accounts that are newly created as of a given anchor date. If they interact with accounts or posts specified in the config, they'll automatically get labeled. This is useful for dealing with site rates, astroturfing, and brigading.
Watching the engagement on the White House's posts is so funny. They have a decent amount of likes, almost entirely from accounts followed by no one, many of which have been created very recently.
So that indicates some forward planning on their astroturfing.
