Kiev State Academic Puppet Theater
Founded in 1927 on the initiative of People's Artist of Ukraine A.I. Solomarsky and I.S. Deeva. It is distinguished by the highest skill of its actors.

The theater building was erected in 2005 in the form of a fairy-tale castle according to the design of the architects V.L. and O.V. Yudin.

In front of the theater in the puppet theater is the musical fountain Thumbelina.
The fairy-tale perception of the theatre is enhanced by sculptures of favourite children's characters: Buratino, Pierrot (both by sculptor G. Savchenko), Malvina with Artemon (sculptor V. Primakov), Thumbelina, Papa Carlo, Kotigoroshko (all by sculptor T. Tsyupa, I. Glukhenky), Wandering Musicians (sculptor G. Savchenko).

The theatre's interior is painted with beautiful motifs on the themes of Ukrainian fairy tales (artists K. Lavrov and others), decorated with ceramics (Boris Danilov) and delightful lamps (Maria Ralko). The fairy-tale atmosphere is enhanced by a huge aquarium, gnomes mining treasures, a collection of antique theatre dolls and a floor magnificently inlaid with granite and wood (Olga Yudina)

The Way of the Cross—traditional 14 stations represented in 14 sculptural objects. The image captures fragments of the sculptural composition of the Fourteenth Station (XIV: The Burial of Jesus Christ): "The body of Jesus is laid in the tomb." Matthew 27:59-61: Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock. He rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and departed. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb. See also: Mark 15:46-47; Luke 23:53-56; John 19:39-42.

This sculptural composition follows the European tradition of Calvaria (Latin: Golgotha), a term used for various historical and architectural monumental religious sites, primarily found in European countries.

Uniquely, this composition is also dedicated to the 1130th anniversary of the death of Prince Askold and was installed on the 20th anniversary of the restoration of prayer at Askold’s Grave by Father Ihor Onyshkevych. (Ukrainian inscription: Installed in memory of Mykola-Askold, king and martyr for the Christian faith, on the 1130th anniversary of his passing and the 20th anniversary of the restoration of prayer at Askold’s Grave by Father Ihor Onyshkevych.)

According to unverified sources, the entire 14-station complex was originally planned for a different location: "There was no space near the Church of St. Basil the Great to place the Way of the Cross. And on the Left Bank, near the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, it seemed less appropriate than in Askold’s Grave Park." (I searched extensively for confirmation of this statement but found no reliable sources.)

Askold’s Grave (Askoldova Mohyla) is a historic site and park in Kyiv, Ukraine, located on the steep right bank of the Dnipro River. According to legend, it marks the burial place of Prince Askold, who, along with Dir, ruled Kyiv in the 9th century before being overthrown by Prince Oleg in 882. The site has long been associated with medieval Kyiv’s history and religious traditions.

In the 10th century, Princess Olga, the first Christian ruler of Kyivan Rus, built a wooden Church of St. Nicholas over Askold’s burial site. Over the centuries, the area became a monastic center, with Orthodox monks settling there. By the 17th century, a new monastic complex was established nearby, leading to the relocation of the monastery while the cemetery remained.

During the Soviet era, the cemetery was dismantled, and the site was transformed into a park. Many historical graves were lost, and the St. Nicholas Church was repurposed as a restaurant. However, following Ukraine’s independence, the church was restored and returned to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In 2017, a bell tower with 51 bells was added to the site.

Today, Askold’s Grave remains a cultural and religious landmark, featuring memorials, chapels, and historical markers. It is a place of reflection, offering panoramic views of Kyiv and preserving the memory of its medieval past.

"The Ballerina" – Kyiv’s Unique Street Art Sculpture
The "Ballerina" sculpture stands at the intersection of Sretenskaya and Streletskaya Streets in Kyiv.
Carved from linden wood, the Ballerina stands on the corner of Sretenskaya and Streletskaya Streets, her tutu made of wire mesh giving the impression she has just gracefully floated down from the stage. Her ceramic face is slightly sad, pensive, and beautiful. Interestingly, the sculpture was installed at the request of local residents in honor of a real-life ballerina who lives nearby.

"The face and hands are made of ceramic, the hair from red synthetic threads, and the tutu from construction mesh," explains Skretutsky. "A month ago, someone tried to vandalize her. There was a sneaker print high up on her left leg," he says, touching the sculpture. "Looks like some karate enthusiast tested her durability. The Ballerina held strong—I smoothed out the damage—but I still can’t understand how anyone could kick a girl, even if she is just a sculpture."

From a Matchstick to a Ballerina: The Story Behind Kyiv’s Charming Sculpture
At the corner of Sretenskaya and Streletskaya Streets, sculptor Konstantin Skretutsky—already known for his other works—installed a unique monument honoring a ballerina who lives nearby. Ironically, he originally planned to create… an ordinary matchstick. But everything changed thanks to an anonymous note.

Here’s how the artist describes the matchstick’s transformation into a ballerina:
"At first, I made a matchstick sculpture there. The tree was perfect—straight, thin, and smooth. I ordered a ceramic 'head' for it and sawed the trunk into shape. Just a simple matchstick. But two days later, someone left a note on it: 'Please make a ballerina here. A renowned ballerina lives nearby—it would mean a lot to her. Thank you.' How could I ignore such a request? And so, the matchstick became a ballerina."
