You can explore local history at the Birdtail Country Museum on Main Street. Housed in a 1900s stone bank, it features 4,000+ artifacts—like diaries from 1878, vintage tools, and trophies of Samuel Larcombe, the “World Wheat King” who developed rust-resistant wheat.

Flooding hit the Birdtail River often—1904, 1947–48, 1970, and more. A dam built in 1931 formed a small lake for recreation, but high waters repeatedly damaged the park. Determined volunteers always rebuilt, keeping Birtle’s riverside a beloved gathering spot.

I don’t “believe in” birdtail gryphons, but birdtails should make their birdtails children of the tail.001 transform, not hind.hips, if they’d like to take advantage of this untested feature (you might need to find and adjust the sensitivity).

Long before settlers arrived, Cree, Ojibway, and other Indigenous travellers followed routes near the Birdtail River crossing. A fresh-water spring made this spot a favoured campsite. These Indigenous roots shaped Birtle’s early trails and cultural landscape.
