Sorry to pile on; I know you’re trying to be supportive, but trans women aren’t in any sense “men who identify as women.” Our bodies are often more like cis women’s bodies than cis men’s bodies, down to the biochemical level, including many kinds of proteins our bodies make that cis men’s don’t.

“So if Recorp’s teaming up with Helical,” I said, “we’re talking clones?”
Richard shook his head. “No, that’s still illegal. What we’re after are biological vehicles; mindless bodies that are strictly for transfer purposes.”
“Drones,” I offered.
“Essentially,” he agreed. “No consciousness, no memories, no mind. No person. Just the body.”
I downed the remaining gin. “Can you do that?”
“No,” said Richard. “Not yet. It’s all in the theoretical phase right now, anyway. Helical can’t actually make human clones, legally; and anyway, Don Cameron and I haven’t figured out how to abort neural development as the clone grows.”
“Theoretically,” I added.
“Of course, theoretically.” Richard sounded offended. “We’re not actually doing any of this—just models on the computer. Virtual biochemical reactions.”
“So Ainslee’s lobbying for legislation on science you haven’t even invented yet?” I waved my glass at the bartender. “I’d appreciate it if you didn’t lie to me, Richie. Policy’s always at least a decade behind technology; their brains don’t think in the fourth dimension. Future developments are a foreign language to bureaucrats.”
“I’m not lying,” Richard insisted. “Listen, Henry, as far as I know, we’re just thinking about this stuff. Nothing’s actually being done.”
“Then why start talks with Policy?” The waiter walked over with my refill from the bar. I eased into the second round, realizing I’d already had quite a bit this morning.
“How should I know, Henry? I’m a scientist, not a businessman. Nor a lawyer.”
“Okay, scientist,” I said, “do copies work now?”
“Copies? Sure,” said Richard. “They work. They’re illegal, but we’ve done experimental research behind the scenes. Administration knows about it; it’s no secret. All of the big transference outfits have been trying them out.”

Richard frowned. “Not really. The copies would be strictly for utility purposes, owned by their original source or...”

“Legalized slavery, Richie,” I said, and threw back the rest of the second gin-and-tonic.
“You don’t get it,” he said, sounding almost frantic. “They’re not people, Henry! They’re...they’re extensions. They’re tools.”
“And how would they feel about that themselves?” I pointed out.
He was scrambling to cover his butt, ethically speaking. “They could be programmed not to!”
“So if you can make slaves who don’t mind being slaves, that makes it okay?”
“Damn it, Henry!” His voice was raised a bit too high. “You sound just like Alice!”
A conversation stopper. While I was in the pit stop, I figured another lube was in order—I waved my glass at the bartender again.
I sniffed. Then—the hell with it—I grabbed a liquid cig from my pack and stuck it between my lips. The instant smoke felt warm and smooth going down my throat.
