Come my little nerds, I have another dinosaur fact(ish) for you.
Nyasasaurus. It was an avemetatarsalia archosaur from the Middle Triassic period.
It is potentially the earliest known dinosaur, or at least a very close relative.

Since #Croctober has just kicked off, here's an older illustration of the VERY distant relative to crocodilians, the Triassic archosaur Teleocrater. I made this illustration in 2019, just 2 years into my career, for the Field Museum of Natural History's Evolving Planet exhibition

A herbivorous archosaur, Trilophosaurus buettneri, which if you look closely at its jaws has no teeth at the front of its mouth. It might have had some sort of beak. #FossilFriday ⚒️🧪

A new gracilisuchid archosaur taxon is always welcome, and Taihangosuchus wuxiangensis is very nicely represented by fossils, including more of the forelimbs than we've seen before in the clade!

The nerd in me wants to say "trick question!" because Tyrannosaurus rex is tyrant lizard king BUT it is an archosaur and archos is leader/master

In art school I spent a year in anatomy class, We drew every bone in a human skeleton, life-sized, as well as many entire specimens at the natural history museum (not life-sized).
Maybe not now, but there was a time when I could identify nearly any bone in a mammal or archosaur.

An analysis of it’s bones show that it was closer to Coelophysis, an early dinosaur.
Which suggests that it was closer to early dinosaurs than to other archosaurs at the time.
But unfortunately we don’t have the skull or enough fossil material to determine if it was an early dinosaur or not.

Thank you for the opportunity as well.

Indeed. I don't mind it at all if it's a clear creative intent. But sometimes I see dragons that are clearly very archosaur inspired in nature on the outside, but the skeleton is basically a wolf with horns 😅 Dragons based on an off shoot of synapsid reptiles would be a cool take, though!

(it's this one: academic.oup.com/icb/article/...) It's not just a biomechanics paper. I worked my butt off trying to make this a balanced and thorough review and synthesis of ideas on Triassic-Jurassic archosaur(iform) mass extinctions/survival.
Walking—and Running and Jumping—with Dinosaurs and their Cousins, Viewed Through the Lens of Evo...
Abstract. Archosauria diversified throughout the Triassic Period before experiencing two mass extinctions near its end ∼201 Mya, leaving only the crocodile-line

It is an interesting thought; I do however wonder about potential genetic constraints on the archosaur (archelosaur even?) lineage in terms of potential reversal to viviparity as it is not confirmed in any archosauromorph lineage other than the tanysauria

PS. the membership of the egret in the dinosaur/archosaur lineage really comes through in this image. Really reminds one of what birds are, from an evolutionary standpoint....
