No secret that there's a lot of amazing stuff at AMNH. Some of my favorites are these massive chimneys recovered from hydrothermal vents of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, more than a mile beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean.

Today's bombshell in @nature.com by Lindsay Zanno & James Napoli @jgn-paleo.bsky.social (bit.ly/4qBE6ng) shows that putative juvvy T. rex fossils actually are Nanotyrannus. I reviewed the manuscript, so Nature invited me to write the News & Views commentary. Free link: rdcu.be/eNv94 🦖

Happy #FossilFriday! Today is my last day at the AMNH before I return to Oxford so in honor of that here’s one of my favorite fossils on display here, a full skeleton of Cotylorhynchus romeri! Cotylorhynchus is a caseid, which were among the earliest large terrestrial herbivores on Earth! 🧪⚒️🦊

Beautiful people look at the new Black in Natural History Museums at the American Museum of Natural History “Explore the stories of 17 modern and historical Black scientists, artists, and curators in natural history. Presented as a timeline starting in the 1600s through today, Black in Natural History Museums features profiles of scientists, artists, and curators across natural history fields, from entomology and botany to anthropology and marine biology. Learn about John Edmonstone, a former enslaved person who taught taxidermy to Charles Darwin, and Margaret Collins, the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in entomology, among others. In addition to celebrating the featured naturalists and their accomplishments, the exhibition notes the challenges and adversity Black naturalists have faced in pursuing their work. Included with any admission. She specializes in dragonflies, damselflies, termites and cockroaches. She is currently a curator at the American Museum of Natural History and past president of the Entomological Society of America. She was the first Black woman to hold both positions. Dr. Ware has received awards from the U.S. government for her work."

Looking for a very specific photo of the Ornithischian Hall at AMNH. I want to see the mummified Lambeosaurus from far enough away that you can see the shape and dimensions of the case it's in.

Like the 1st image, but further back. Or the 2nd image, but slightly to the left. Can anyone help?

Apex the Stegosaurus is moving to its “permanent” spot at AMNH, between the new Gilder center and the dinosaur halls. Scare quotes because the museum doesn’t own the fossil, and Griffin can choose to extend the loan or recall it in 2028.

Overall the integument in PP is really well done. But honestly the more time goes by, the more I appreciate the dinosaurs from Dinosaur (2000). Which have meticulously textured scaly wrinkly skin that matches known specimens quite well (at least for the time).
