Who else is talking about conceptual framings of ignorance and silencing? I want to dig into the nuances, differences, overlaps, advantages and disadvantages, methodological suitability, etc. of #Disinformation, #Epistemicide, #Agnotology, etc. in applied research contexts! Talk to me if you do too?

Rule by agnotology
The very predictable effects of Trump’s attacks on SNAP is that more Americans will go hungry.

But the Trump administration has a solution for that: it is stopped collecting data on food insecurity. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

First, agnotology research often focuses on the circulation of disinformation to or among the public, policymakers, and other extra-scientific groups. But race science was (and arguably still is) circulated *within* scientific communities. 12/13

Exciting stuff Jason, I'm making a mental note to send you something I wrote re: agnotology in case it's of interest! I think the concept is interesting, crying out for theorizing, and gets into things I think Marxists should care about.

Agnotology can involve:
Publishing misleading or inaccurate scientific data
Using "reasonable doubt" to assuage health fears
Associating smoking with positive attributes like youth, vigor, and beauty
Creating an environment of doubt to keep people in a state of indecision

In one of my medical history lectures, I used this article by Londa Schiebinger which begins with Merian's travels & publications:

"Agnotology and Exotic Abortifacients: The Cultural Production of Ignorance in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World," PROGS. AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOC., 149, 3 (2005)
And of course the artist's birthday today is the perfect time to mention a new book about her, forthcoming Sept 1 in the #IlluminatingWomenArtists series, co-published by @lhartbooks.bsky.social & Getty Pubs -

knowledgeという字が書名に見える本たちは、以前『現代思想』の「無知学(agnotology)」特集を読んで注文したものだと思われます。
