Side effect of the story having actual stakes now is that the Dragonlord has to be a Zoma-level threat instead of a mustache-twirling baddie. I don't dislike that, but I hope this will lead to something interesting (unlike Zoma....) through his retconned-in connection with the dragoness from DQ3

I loved how they had a hat tip to Dragon Quest in Daima by implying that two of the past Demon Kings before Arbura were versions of the final bosses of Dragon Quest 1 and 3, Dragonlord and Zoma. (They were among the mysterious silhouettes of the past rulers.)

this game doesn't do much to innovate on the 2D weapon fighter formula
while it is cool to see the descendants of heroes from the past, they don't do enough to stand on their own and the new characters seem ill fitting at best. It's hard to recommend unless you love Golden Axe & weapon fighters
