Archives are the raw materials of history, allowing us to look at the past through contemporary eyes & see life in all its unpredictable, messy, joyful, scary variety. They help us challenge narratives, explore hidden histories & connect with being human.

OBJECTION received from:- Miss J. Kitts, 9, Wilton Street, Stoke, Devonport. File 11-3. 8th April, 1912. Sir, In the receipt of the notice, I am surprised to think It has come a farthing less, instead of a farthing more. I would like for the employer to stand by a worker for an hour and see the amount of work a worker has to do in a garment in an hour to earn that, and then judge to see if she does not deserve the higher rate. I for one can speak from experience of 22 years in the Wholesale clothing trade and know what hard work means to be able to get just a living wage. I started at the age of thirteen getting half crown for the first six months, 3/- the next six months after that I was put under a machinist to learn Trousers and Boys’ knickers getting a third of what a machinist earned my wages averaged eight shillings a week in the busiest time and where no trade, go home. For four years I was a learner until there was a vacancy of a machine for me to go on. I was able then to earn good money for a few years until they started cutting down the prices owing to foreign competition, we were told, so we had to submit as it was our living, at last it was getting so bad, I had to leave as I had my widow mother to help support, this last five years and half and I could not afford to work for little. I urge the dropping of all charges and the immediate, unconditional release of all eighteen defendants." Late 1920s or early 1920s photograph of two women. The other (identity currently unknown) is standing behind her and resting one hand on the back of the chair, she is wearing a top hat, bow tie, waistcoat and frock coat.

Archives allow us to understand and to engage with the world around us, our stories, our communities, and our landscapes.

They allow us to connect with the past, but they also inspire our future, igniting our curiosity and imagination.
Boxes created during an arts and crafts workshop designing phone exchange boxes inspired by stained glass. People sat around a table consulting magazines from the archive collection. Tables with maps and plans of buildings laid out on them. A flyer for the Shush Snip Rip exhibition held at Explore York libraries and archives. The exhibition looked at the experiences of people with disbailites in the past and in the present.

Because archives have history just waiting to be explored. For us to find and make our own discoveries. To write our own stories. It’s about people and places that aren’t on display in museums. We can bring them to back life again. Once alive, they’ve now become history.
My husbands Grace who lived to be 112! Once the oldest person in the UK, She’s largely forgotten now. But she’s in my archive! Union badges once proudly worn by a shipwright who worked on the transatlantic liners from Liverpool. Symbols of a long forgotten trade. Hardworking families.. we all have sorrow and troubles but sometimes we can leave them behind for a day. I can join my husbands family in their joy Children at play remind us that we all become part of history
