The Sydisi next to Sytimlor stared at the tall, slender human woman, her dark eyes cold as they reflected the crimson light. He began glancing toward the viewport as if hoping he could leap through it. His black eyes narrowed as they returned to the flowing red spirals. “I don’t answer to you. I came only because you are holding my world hostage.”

“Strange to learn how that feels, isn’t it? Except you’ve held the lives of your own military hostage for years now, haven’t you? Decided which of them lived, which died, who would be sacrificed to Mir’s plan to beg for peace.”

The Sydisi Head of Intelligence froze as the words left her mouth. He retreated further toward the viewport, then caught himself, seeing his reaction had drawn the attention of Sytimlor. Her back was to Recari, but Elayna Michaels heard the snarl that suddenly began to reverberate like the slow roar of a lion.

She glanced back at the Sydisi Senator, then past him to the other seven. “I’ll explain everything, and even include our classified analysis, but it amounts to what I just said. Mir has worked with your intelligence division on two coordinating plans. One was to infiltrate the Alliance, that one you suspected you told Ansel about before getting him back.

“To facilitate it, to set the stage for a seeming end to the war, Mir let us destroy or possibly arranged the destruction of just enough of your own fleet to make the need for a treaty seem genuine. We assume he thought with what ships remained he could take advantage of the chaos the infiltration would ultimately create.”

Sytimlor and the other seven Recari were now looking at the still nameless intelligence chief. He was attempting to regain his composure, but they could, perhaps, see something in his demeanor she could not. The Vice Supreme had moved few steps away from him, a thinly clawed left hand slowly raising to his nose. She suddenly remembered that the Sydisi had a sense of smell equal to a Terran do…
