WMATA staff advocated for heavy rail during early Purple Line planning. I don't remember whether tunneled or elevated, but I strongly suspect the former (outside Bethesda-Silver Spring where surface ROW exists) because WMATA is rarely elevated & also topography in East Silver Spring is steep.

Can we please stop talking about how @bart.gov needs to "cut costs". They are the most efficient transit agency in the nation and the trains are overcrowded with riders.
@governor.ca.gov fund BART to run trains every 6 minutes like WMATA in DC. End transit austerity!

Note to anyone planning to attend the DC march - Metro sometimes closes the Smithsonian station to disperse the crowds. Be sure to figure out what other stations will work for you.

But why would the State/MTA decline funds from the City? The City also doesn’t have to apply this to MTA. It can introduce a secondary bus system it runs itself. It’s like how Circulator in DC was run by the City of Washington while MetroBus was run by WMATA. Circulator was free, MetroBus is not.

Here are the Subway/Metro Station design guidelines that were compiled by UMTA/USDOT in the 1970s in an attempt to prevent WMATA-style cost overruns again.

BART and WMATA were being constructed contemporaneously with most of the Tokyo subway system. The main difference is that we just kinda stopped for no reason, and other countries continued.

Another month of US transit agency data is just in, and DC's WMATA remains the fastest-growing major US transit agency, with ridership up 13% compared to last year

An under appreciated benefit of smartphones is now accessible they’ve made transit. Prior to having one I could not keep enough of the WMATA map in my head to use buses. Now I use them all over town.

Metro says it'll shut down Bethesda, Medical Center & Grosvenor on the Red Line for 2 months next summer - July 6-Sept 6. #wmata says it'll be rehabbing Grosvenor's platform & doing bridge work, and it's building a mezzanine at Bethesda to connect to a future Purple Line station.

Also on 10 separate weekends between Feb & June (but not at peak cherry blossom time) Metro plans to shut down Crystal City, and on three of those weekends will also close Potomac Yard. Metro is working on a plan to make sure people can get to DCA during those weekends. #wmata
