I've finally started getting into #Rust programming. As a learning project, I'm working on a TinyBASIC, which I'm calling FlakyBASIC.

I'm glad I persevered and overcame the steep learning curve. Now that things are beginning to click, I really enjoy Rust.

I stumbled online across the manual for Sinclair 4K BASIC for the ZX80, which brought back memories of using a friend's ZX80 or ZX81. While most people bought it for the price, its Tiny BASIC had some clever ideas: https://troypress.com/sinclair-4k-basic-for-the-zx80/ #tinybasic #retrocomputing

Writing a #compiler is interesting, I'm reviving an old #typescript project where I wrote a compiler for #tinybasic. Now I'm rewriting the project in #cpp, will also #OpenSource it once it's finished.

It will first be a #bytecode #vm but eventually be turned into a native compiler

the people's permacomputer project is crowdfunding AUD$500 for some prototypes, which backers will receive.

The game was for a jam. After the jam, I released an improved version which you can find, along with Tiny BASIC and some other games, on my Tiny BASIC web site. tinybasic.cyningstan.org.uk #TinyBASIC

A while ago, I was briefly interested in writing compilers and interpreters. My only such project was Tiny BASIC. To demonstrate the language I made some games, including Kingdom of the Lyre, a text adventure (Tiny BASIC has no strings). It's at cyningstan.itch.io/kingdom-of-t... #TinyBASIC

A Proper Computer For A Dollar?
When a tipster came to us with the line “One dollar BASIC computer”, it intrigued us enough to have a good look at [Stan6314]’s TinyBasRV computer. It’s a small PCB that forms a computer running BASIC. Not simply a microcontroller with a serial header, this machine is a fully functioning BASIC desktop computer that takes a PS/2 keyboard and a VGA monitor. Would that cheap price stand up? The board uses a CH32 microcontroller, a RISC-V part that’s certainly very cheap indeed and pretty powerful, paired with an I2C memory chip for storage. The software is TinyBASIC. There’s some GPIO expandability and an I2C bus, and it’s claimed it can run in headless mode for a BASIC program to control things. We haven’t added up all the parts in the BoM to check, but even if it’s not a one dollar computer it must come pretty close. We can see it could make a fun project for anyone. It’s certainly not the only small BASIC board out there, it’s got some competition. Thanks [Metan] for the tip.

"Hello!

Love the project. It has been really useful to me. Thank you very much for your hard work.

I have been using Stefan's BASIC to run old 70s teleprinter BASIC text editors.

There is no LINE INPUT statement in Stefan's BASIC.

How can I […]

first practical experiment of the project.

stefan's tinybasic burned to an arduino mega.

not much memory, but from here the user environment of the permacomputer can be developed.

it will not be difficult to get BASIC running on the permacomputer.

it has been some time since the parts all arrived.

life intervened, but i still have all the parts.

HN thread on writing a TinyBASIC compiler. Covers why BASIC is a good start, hand-writing parsers vs. tools (lex/yacc), and the "compiler" vs. "transpiler" debate when targeting another high-level language like Go. #Compilers 1/5
