From our archives: in 1872, A.G. Churchill published a "Poetical Directory" of the Town of Lindsay (and surrounding country).

Yes, it's a directory of local businesses, with a rhyme for each one!

Henry Atkinson, Butcher. Stall At the Market.
He daily kills, his shamble fills
With excellent fresh meat,
Beef, mutton, ham, veal, pork and lamb,
All kinds dressed very neat ;
Cuts large or small at public call,
To bake, to boil or fry,
Sells quarter side and sells the hide,
Keeps great and grand supply ;
Buys from the stall, steers, heifers, all,
Pigs, lambs, and fine fat sheep,
In summer nice lard down with ice
In English style to keep--
Where farmers call, mechanics all,
Both merchants and hotels ;
He keeps the flesh all sweet and fresh,
It neither taints nor smells.

Churns, sugar kettles, and to bake,
Scythes, grain cradles, fork and rake,
Sleigh, shoe castings, fanning mill,

From upper lip and chin ;
Will leave moustache, a thin wag dash,
Till fashions change again ;
Leaves kissing space in centre face,
Between the hairy toys,
While gay young girls perfume their curls,
As well as bearded boys ;
Not one like him to scent and trim,
And do it so complete ;
Give him a call, both one and all,
He shaves and trims so neat.

For custom in his line ;
Takes measures too for boot and shoe,
Then cuts up stock not split ;
Keeps workmen neat upon the seat,
All nimble with their kit,
Will make and mend all jobs you send,
Of men and women's ware;
Boots long and short of every sort,
Are made for men with care;
Work calf and kip, make gaiter, slip,
And lady's lace boots fine,
With brass eyelet well clinch't and set,
That on the instep shine.
