My pfp is ghost in the shell cause it speaks to the modern moment and my handle is the Dax symbiont because the trill alien species is the handiest simple metaphor for how I conceive of gender and I am vibrating on frequencies that make cisgender heterosexuals experience gender dysphoria

Why do single-celled organisms commit suicide?
Our latest research reveals that it is not a mystery, but a form of cooperation. Programmed cell death (PCD) can strengthen endosymbiosis between host and symbiont, thereby helping clones:

Reciprocal effects of programmed cell death on fitness in unicellular endosymbiotic Chlorella and its ciliate host
Abstract. Programmed cell death (PCD), the genetically controlled active cellular suicide mechanism in multicellular organisms, also exists in unicellular

Histone acetylation modulation by a small molecule inhibitor recapitulates symbiont-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility
Histone acetylation modulation by a small molecule inhibitor recapitulates symbiont-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility
Kaur et al. identify histone acetylation as a host-encoded mechanism underlying Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). Chemical and genetic inhibition of histone acetyltransferase activity in Drosophila recapitulates CI-like embryonic lethality, independent of the symbiont. These findings enable symbiont-free, programmable manipulation of arthropod reproduction for fundamental research and potentially applied arthropod control.

There's definitely a gender component, but like I'm specifically referring to the several episodes that talk about how difficult it is to get a symbiont

"Invasive Procedures" offers valuable explorations of the Trill symbiont/host dynamic but follows a well-charted and all too familiar hostage story blueprint. The character moments and broader details are interesting enough, but the mechanics of the story hold it back.

What happens to endosymbionts and their hosts as they forego sovereignty? Athreya et al. find new reasons why an evolutionary transition might not happen, and that host-symbiont mutual dependence might evolve faster than reproductive cohesion.

there are lots of fun things you could do with Schaxel, like: “a parasite is just a symbiont who doesn’t know it yet” or “communism is the mediated return of social animality” or “from each according to their autotrophy to each according to their heterotrophy” & etc
