After a day exploring Sutton Hoo NT we couldn't resist popping to Hollesley Common to see the BROWN SHRIKE. Never too close but great to see and 16 years since my last in the UK! #suffolkbirding #rarebirdsuk #birds #birding #Birdsseenin2025 #suffolk #UKBirding

I had another attempt at the Brown Shrike on Hollesley Common today. The bird remained distant am but was a bit closer pm, although mainly visible through a chain link fence. These two shots have been sharpened in ON1 PhotoRaw. They look good to me, but the eyes are a bit suspect... #suffolkbirding

Amongst all this I added 8 new species for the garden. Some were overdue, others less expected. These were Mute Swan, Marsh Harrier, Short-eared Owl, Woodlark, Grey Wagtail, Firecrest, Crossbill and Reed Bunting #SuffolkBirding

Been off work for 2.5 months due to a back injury, but for the latter part of that time I was about to enjoy some garden vis-mig. Always kept a garden list, but it is amazing what goes over when you can invest the time. Some lovely movements of Mipits and Thrushes in particular #SuffolkBirding

Lucky timing at Hollesley as I arrived to find my mate @janl28.bsky.social & his wife watching Crossbills! He then showed me where the Brown Shrike was seen 1hr before & it promptly reappeared (life✅, thanks Jan😃). Bonus Stonechat and Dartford Warbler too! #suffolkbirding #rarebirdsUK

Firecrest at Corton today, one of my favourite British birds. This one was one part of a large influx on the Suffolk coast #suffolkbirding

It's been a Shrike-tacular last four weeks around Norfolk & Suffolk ~ a stunning adult Turkestan, a typically educational Brown, the isabelline overtones of Daurian, some monochrome magic of Great Grey & a classic 1w Red-backed.

Great to drop in on the Brown Shrike at Upper Hollesley Common on Friday on the way down south. It was still attracting plenty of admirers. #SuffolkBirding

First-winter Brown Shrike
Upper Hollesley Common, Suffolk
October 24 2025
A county first for our neighbours and, as with the other Brown Shrikes I've seen in the UK, an enjoyable & educational individual. A chameleon in the different light too.

It was a beautiful day in Suffolk today after the rain and gales of yesterday, and the Hollesley Brown Shrike duly emerged from hiding. It showed very well but never in range of my camera so this is a phonescoped shot

Lapland Bunting, Dunwich yesterday. A scarce migrant through Suffolk (rarely over winters), Lapland Bunting numbers have varied from 6-21 (av. 11) in the county over the past 10 years and is now hard to connect with, so it was nice to find this #ukbirding #suffolkbirding

I couldn't resist the lure of the Red-tailed Shrike at Dunwich Heath. A splendid, confiding bird, and, judging by the number of birders, probably the most photographed bird in East Anglia at the moment. #Suffolkbirding
